Villanova Routs Butler Behind Dominant Second Half
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — A dominant second-half surge propelled the Villanova Wildcats to a decisive 85-67 victory over the Butler Bulldogs in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at a sold-out Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Wildcats, who trailed by three points at halftime, outscored the Bulldogs 55-34 after the break, shooting a blistering 62 percent from the floor in the second half to turn a competitive contest into a runaway. Villanova improved to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while Butler fell to 10-5 and 0-2.
The game’s pivotal sequence came early in the second half, erasing Butler’s 33-30 halftime lead in a matter of minutes. Villanova opened the period on a 17-3 run, a blistering stretch that showcased its offensive efficiency and defensive intensity. Acaden Lewis, who finished with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds, catalyzed the run with his playmaking, assisting on three consecutive baskets. The spurt included 3-pointers from Bryce Lindsay and Matthew Hodge, and a layup from Duke Brennan, silencing the crowd of 8,034 and forcing a Butler timeout just over three minutes into the half.
Butler never recovered. The Wildcats’ offensive rating of 120.6, fueled by 55.2 percent shooting overall and a 46-28 advantage in points in the paint, proved insurmountable. Villanova’s defense was equally impactful, generating 13 Butler turnovers and converting them into 15 points. The Bulldogs managed only a 38.1 percent clip from the field and a frigid 22.2 percent from 3-point range.
Villanova’s balanced attack featured five players in double figures. Hodge led all scorers with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Lindsay added 18 points, all in the second half, on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Brennan recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyler Perkins contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Butler was led by Finley Bizjack with 18 points and Michael Ajayi, who posted a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Bulldogs’ offense, which entered the game averaging over 80 points per contest, was held to its second-lowest output of the season.
The first half was a sloppy, defensive struggle featuring 17 combined turnovers. Butler built its lead as high as seven points, capitalizing on Villanova’s early mistakes, but the Wildcats closed the gap by halftime, setting the stage for their second-half explosion.
According to the Interstat ELO system, Villanova entered with a 60.6 percent probability to win. The Wildcats covered the pregame spread as a 1-point favorite, and the total score of 152 surpassed the over/under line of 146.5.
Villanova next hosts Creighton on Wednesday. Butler returns to action Tuesday at home against Saint John’s.
