Mercer at East Tennessee State
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — A key early-season Southern Conference men’s basketball clash is set for Saturday when the East Tennessee State Buccaneers host the Mercer Bears at ETSU Athletic Center.
Both teams enter the January 3, 2026, matchup looking to build momentum in league play. The Buccaneers (9-5) are coming off a dominant 74-49 road victory at The Citadel on Dec. 30. Guard Blake Barkley led the way with 17 points, continuing a strong season that includes a 20-point performance in a win over South Alabama earlier in December.
The Bears (8-6) aim to bounce back from a narrow 74-72 loss at Furman on New Year’s Eve. Despite the defeat, Mercer showcased its resilience, led by a formidable performance from forward Armani Mighty. The standout big man recorded 13 rebounds and blocked five shots against the Paladins, part of a recent stretch that includes double-doubles against Washington State and Clemson.
Mighty’s presence in the paint, averaging nearly four blocks per game over his last five contests, will be a primary focus for ETSU. His matchup with the Buccaneers’ interior defense could dictate the game’s tempo.
East Tennessee State has been strong at home this season, boasting notable wins over Central Arkansas and Louisiana-Monroe in Johnson City. Mercer, however, has proven capable on the road, securing a victory at Elon in November and playing tight games at Clemson and Washington State.
Historically, games in this series have been closely contested, adding another layer to this conference opener. The Buccaneers will rely on Barkley’s scoring and a balanced attack that saw Brian Taylor and Jordan McCullum also reach double figures in the win over The Citadel. Mercer will counter with Mighty’s two-way dominance and the backcourt scoring of Baraka Okojie, who poured in 22 points in the loss to Furman.
Saturday’s winner will gain an early advantage in the Southern Conference standings as both programs begin a grueling January schedule.
