East Tennessee State Rallies Past Mercer in Southern Conference Matchup
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — A dominant second-half surge fueled by relentless defense and a decisive advantage at the free-throw line propelled East Tennessee State to a 77-71 victory over Mercer in a Southern Conference men’s basketball clash Saturday at a raucous ETSU Athletic Center.
The Buccaneers, overcoming a three-point halftime deficit, outscored the Bears 45-36 after intermission to secure the win in front of 3,122 fans. The most important part of the game was East Tennessee State’s transformative defensive pressure and offensive execution in the final 20 minutes, which turned a tight contest into a controlled victory.
After a first half that featured eight ties and five lead changes, the Buccaneers emerged from the locker room with renewed vigor. They quickly erased Mercer’s 35-32 halftime lead and built their own cushion by attacking the basket and capitalizing on Mercer’s mistakes. The Bears, who committed 13 turnovers, saw several of them converted into easy transition opportunities for ETSU during the critical opening stretch of the second half.
The statistical disparity at the charity stripe told a significant part of the story. East Tennessee State attempted 27 free throws, making 23, while Mercer went just 12 of 17 from the line. That 11-point margin proved insurmountable for the Bears on a afternoon where both teams struggled from the field; ETSU shot 24 of 57, Mercer 25 of 58.
Brian Taylor led the Buccaneers with 21 points and eight rebounds, continuing his strong play after a 13-point performance in a win over The Citadel earlier in the week. He was instrumental in the second-half push, drawing fouls and converting at the line. Blake Barkley added 19 points, including several key baskets down the stretch, while Cam Morris anchored the interior with 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Jaylen Smith provided a crucial spark off the bench with 13 points.
Mercer was led by Brady Shoulders, who poured in 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Baraka Okojie added 15 points and four assists, but also committed several of Mercer’s costly turnovers against ETSU’s active hands; the Buccaneers finished with eight steals.
The game’s tempo was measured, with both teams having 70 possessions. East Tennessee State’s offensive efficiency rating of 110.3 outpaced Mercer’s 101.3, underscoring their more effective shot creation and ability to earn easier points.
With the win, East Tennessee State improved to 10-5 overall and continued its strong start to conference play. Mercer fell to 8-7. The Buccaneers will host Virginia Military Institute on Wednesday, while Mercer returns home to face The Citadel the same night.
