Preview: American Eagles at VCU Rams

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — Two teams with identical records and contrasting styles will meet Thursday afternoon when the American Eagles visit the VCU Rams at Siegel Center.

Both squads enter the nonconference matchup at 7-4. American has won three straight, including a 78-60 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 6. VCU is looking to build momentum after an 84-58 rout of Niagara on Monday.

The Eagles are led by guard Julen Iturbe, who is coming off a strong all-around performance with 13 points, three rebounds and five assists against Maryland-Eastern Shore. Over his last three games, Iturbe is averaging 9.0 points and 3.0 assists.

VCU will counter with forward Lazar Djokovic, a force in the paint. He scored 18 points and blocked four shots against Niagara, showcasing the defensive intensity synonymous with the Rams’ program. In his last four games against high-major competition, Djokovic is averaging 13.5 points and 2.5 blocks.

American’s offense has found a rhythm during its win streak, averaging 81.7 points per game. However, the Eagles have struggled on the road this season, with losses at Wake Forest, George Washington and Rutgers by an average of 19.3 points.

VCU’s “Havoc” defense will present a significant challenge. The Rams are 5-1 at home this season, with the lone loss a narrow 81-78 defeat to New Mexico. They have held opponents to 68.2 points per game at Siegel Center.

The game represents a final tune-up before league play begins for both teams. American opens Patriot League action next week, while VCU starts Atlantic 10 Conference play on Dec. 31.

Thursday’s contest tips off at 7 p.m. EST.
