VCU Rams Overpower American Eagles in High-Scoring Home Victory

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase at Siegel Center on Thursday night, the VCU Rams used a dominant second-half performance to pull away from the American Eagles, securing a 105-83 victory in nonconference men’s basketball.

A crowd of 7,637 saw the Rams improve to 8-4 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 7-5.

The game’s most critical sequence arrived early in the second half, transforming a competitive contest into a commanding VCU lead. American, trailing 48-35 at halftime, opened the second period with a Julen Iturbe layup to cut the deficit to 11. VCU responded with a decisive 17-4 run over the next four and a half minutes, effectively putting the game out of reach.

The surge was fueled by the Rams’ interior dominance and transition efficiency. Lazar Djokovic, the 6-foot-10 sophomore from Serbia, ignited the run with a three-pointer and a powerful dunk. Barry Evans contributed a layup, and Terrence Hill capped the burst with a three-pointer, pushing the VCU advantage to 65-41 with 15:38 remaining. American never recovered from that blitz, as the Rams’ lead ballooned to as many as 28 points.

VCU’s offense operated with remarkable efficiency throughout the night. The Rams shot 56.7% from the field, connecting on 12 of 27 three-point attempts, and were nearly perfect at the free-throw line, making 17 of 18. They scored 105 points on just 71 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 148.8. American also shot well from deep, making 14 three-pointers, and was efficient at the line, but could not match VCU’s consistent firepower or interior presence, shooting 40.3% overall.

The Rams showcased a balanced scoring attack with five players reaching double figures. Guard Nyk Lewis, from Washington, D.C., orchestrated the offense with a team-high 14 points and six assists in 26 minutes. Terrence Hill also scored 17 points, while Djokovic added 15 points and Jadrian Tracey chipped in 12. Evans provided a strong all-around effort with six points, two assists and two blocks.

American was led by the backcourt duo of Geoff Sprouse and Wyatt Nausadis. Sprouse, a guard from Pembroke Pines, Florida, scored 16 points and dished out five assists. Nausadis, from Traverse City, Michigan, led all scorers with 17 points. Iturbe, a 6-foot-6 forward from Greenville, South Carolina, added 15 points and three assists, and Kade Sebastian finished with 10 points.

VCU controlled the glass, outrebounding American 15-9 on the offensive end, which led to 15 second-chance points. The Rams also forced 10 American turnovers, converting them into 14 points, while committing only nine turnovers of their own.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair for the first 12 minutes, with American’s three-point shooting keeping them within striking distance. A three-pointer from Kade Sebastian gave the Eagles an early 3-2 lead, and later, a triple from Geoff Sprouse tied the game at 7-7. VCU began to create separation with a 9-0 run, highlighted by a Barry Evans dunk and a Jadrian Tracey three-pointer, to take a 20-11 lead. American responded with an 8-2 run of its own, capped by a Julen Iturbe three-pointer, to close within 22-19. However, the Rams closed the half on a 26-16 run to establish the 13-point halftime cushion that set the stage for their game-breaking run after the break.

VCU, which entered the game as a heavy favorite according to pregame projections, will next host Rider on Monday. American, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped, travels to face Virginia on Monday.
