Veesaar Leads Tar Heels Past Buccaneers in Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (Interstat) — Henri Veesaar scored 26 points and Caleb Wilson added 20 as North Carolina methodically pulled away from East Tennessee State for a 77-58 victory in a nonconference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at a sold-out Dean Smith Center.

A crowd of 16,548 watched the Tar Heels improve to 10-1, using a decisive 19-point halftime advantage as a foundation for a second half that never saw their lead dip below 13 points. The Buccaneers, who got 14 points from Brian Taylor and 11 from Blake Barkley, fell to 8-4.

The game’s most important sequence came early in the second half, when North Carolina extinguished any lingering hope of an East Tennessee State rally. Leading 45-30, the Tar Heels opened the period with a 10-2 run over the first three and a half minutes. Wilson converted two free throws, followed with a powerful dunk off an offensive rebound, and then Veesaar buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key, assisted by Jarin Stevenson, to push the lead to 45-30 and force an East Tennessee State timeout.

That burst established a tone of control that North Carolina maintained throughout the remainder of the game. The Buccaneers, who had hung tough for much of the first half, could not mount a sustained offensive response against the Tar Heels’ defensive pressure and interior size.

Veesaar, the 7-foot sophomore from Tallinn, Estonia, was the game’s dominant force. He efficiently compiled his game-high point total in just 28 minutes, shooting 11 of 15 from the field while adding two assists and a block. His array of hook shots, dunks, and a key 3-pointer underscored a versatile offensive performance. Wilson, a 6-10 forward from Atlanta, complemented him with an aggressive 20-point effort, frequently attacking the basket and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.

North Carolina point guard Kyan Evans orchestrated the offense with six assists and six points over 29 minutes, consistently finding his big men in advantageous positions. Stevenson, a hometown product from Chapel Hill, contributed six points, four assists and a block.

For East Tennessee State, Taylor led the way with his 14 points, playing a game-high 39 minutes. Barkley’s 11 points came primarily in the paint, while Jordan McCullum added nine points. The Buccaneers struggled to find consistent scoring outside of that trio, particularly from beyond the arc, and were hampered by 15 turnovers.

North Carolina built its halftime lead with a strong closing stretch to the first period. Leading 33-30 after a Maki Johnson 3-pointer for the Buccaneers, the Tar Heels scored the final five points. Veesaar hit a 3-pointer and, after a defensive stop, Jonathan Powell converted a fast-break layup just before the buzzer to send the teams to the locker room with the score 38-30.

The second half belonged entirely to North Carolina, as the Tar Heels outscored East Tennessee State 39-28. The Buccaneers never managed to cut the deficit to single digits after the break, with the Tar Heels’ lead ballooning to as many as 22 points in the final minutes as both teams emptied their benches.

The victory extends North Carolina’s strong start to the season, which includes notable wins over Kansas and Kentucky. The Tar Heels will face another major test Saturday when they meet Ohio State in a neutral-site game in Atlanta.

East Tennessee State, which has faced a challenging early schedule with road games at Dayton and now North Carolina, will look to rebound at home Saturday against Jacksonville State.

The game’s final combined score of 135 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 150. North Carolina covered the pregame spread, which favored the Tar Heels by 15 points.
