Owls Outlast Eagles in Overtime Thriller Behind Cottle, Ellerbee’s 42 Points

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth affair that required an extra period to decide a winner, the Kennesaw State Owls outlasted the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles 102-100 in overtime Wednesday night at a raucous Alico Arena.

The game, a non-conference men’s NCAA Division I basketball matchup, was a stark contrast in styles. Kennesaw State relied on volume scoring from its star guards and dominance in the paint, while Florida Gulf Coast leveraged a disruptive defense and superior ball movement to stay in the fight.

The contest was a tale of two halves and then some. Kennesaw State took a narrow 45-44 lead into halftime, but Florida Gulf Coast clawed back in the second period, ultimately forcing overtime by matching the Owls nearly point for point. The Eagles outscored the Owls 36-35 after the break to send the game to an extra frame tied at 80.

Overtime belonged to the visitors, but just barely. Kennesaw State erupted for 22 points in the five-minute period, narrowly outpacing the Eagles’ 20 to secure the dramatic two-point victory.

The offensive fireworks were led by a pair of phenomenal individual performances. Kennesaw State’s Simeon Cottle, a guard from College Park, Georgia, was virtually unstoppable, pouring in 33 points to lead all scorers. His backcourt mate, RJ Johnson of Huntsville, Alabama, added 11 points, but it was the inside presence of Braedan Lue that provided crucial balance. The forward from Douglasville, Georgia, scored 19 points and was a force on the glass.

For Florida Gulf Coast, the loss came despite a heroic effort from Jordan Ellerbee. The Philadelphia native was spectacular, scoring 42 points and carrying the Eagles’ offense for long stretches. He received strong support from JR Konieczny of South Bend, Indiana, who added 28 points. Rahmir Barno, another Philadelphia product, orchestrated the offense effectively, dishing out eight assists to go with his 14 points.

The statistical sheet highlighted the contrasting paths to the high score. Kennesaw State won the battle inside, outscoring Florida Gulf Coast 46-34 in the paint and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds. The Owls’ offense, while sometimes careless with the ball, was efficient when it held possession, scoring 102 points on just 88 trips for an offensive rating of 115.8.

Florida Gulf Coast’s approach was built on creating extra opportunities. The Eagles forced 19 Kennesaw State turnovers, converting them into 20 points, and recorded 12 steals compared to the Owls’ five. They also shared the ball more effectively, tallying 12 assists. Their offensive rating was a strong 110.5, but it came on 91 possessions, one key factor in the narrow defeat.

Both teams shot nearly identically from the floor and from three-point range. Kennesaw State finished 32 of 63 from the field, while Florida Gulf Coast was 31 of 69. From beyond the arc, the Owls hit 9 of 25 attempts and the Eagles made 10 of 25. The game was ultimately decided at the free-throw line, where Kennesaw State attempted 36 free throws, making 29, while Florida Gulf Coast went 28 for 39 from the stripe.

With the win, Kennesaw State improved its season record to 5-2. The Owls have now won two of their last three games, with the previous contest being an overtime victory against Rice. Florida Gulf Coast falls to 5-3 with the loss, snapping a two-game winning streak that included an overtime win against the same Rice team just one day prior.

The game defied pregame expectations, as national statistical models heavily favored the Eagles to win on their home court. The combined score of 202 points also easily surpassed the over/under line of 163.5, underscoring the offensive explosion that defined the night.

Kennesaw State will look to build on the momentum when it returns home to face Jackson State on Tuesday. Florida Gulf Coast will aim to rebound on the road against Florida International on Wednesday.
