Boston University at Penn State
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase at the Bryce Jordan Center on Tuesday night, the Penn State Nittany Lions outlasted the Boston University Terriers 96 to 87 in a non-conference men’s basketball game.
The contest was a tale of contrasting efficiencies. While both teams shot exceptionally well from the field, with Penn State hitting 57.7 percent and Boston University connecting on 57.4 percent, the disparity at the free-throw line proved decisive. The Nittany Lions attempted 40 free throws, making 28, while the Terriers went to the line only 13 times, converting nine.
Penn State also capitalized on its opportunities by protecting the ball, committing a mere three turnovers compared to eight for Boston University. That edge in possession helped the Nittany Lions maintain control despite a furious second-half shooting display from the visitors.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw Penn State take a 51-35 lead into the break. The Nittany Lions built their advantage through consistent inside scoring and trips to the foul line, establishing a rhythm that the Terriers struggled to disrupt.
However, Boston University emerged from halftime with a renewed offensive firepower. The Terriers erupted for 52 second-half points, largely on the strength of a remarkable 16-for-34 performance from three-point range for the game. Their offensive rating of 139.9 points per 100 possessions was elite, but it was still bested by Penn State’s staggering 145.5 rating.
Michael McNair led the charge for the Terriers, pouring in 28 points in just 27 minutes of action. His scoring burst kept Boston University within striking distance throughout the final period. Ben Roy added 11 points and four assists, while Azmar Abdullah and Malcolm Chimezie each chipped in 11 and eight points, respectively.
Penn State’s victory was a balanced effort. Josh Reed paced the Nittany Lions with 17 points, while Melih Tunca filled the stat sheet with 16 points, four assists and a block. Ivan Juric provided a strong interior presence with 15 points, and Kayden Mingo contributed 14 points and four assists. The Nittany Lions’ ball movement and ability to draw fouls ultimately neutralized the Terriers’ long-range barrage.
With the win, Penn State improved its season record to 6-1. Boston University, which was coming off a narrow 75-74 victory over Harvard, fell to 3-4 overall. The game was played before an announced crowd of 4,424.
Penn State is scheduled to host Sacred Heart on Saturday. Boston University will look to rebound on the road at Northern Kentucky, also on Saturday.
