East Tennessee State Routs Louisiana-Monroe in Home Opener

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers cruised to a 97-55 victory over the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in a non-conference men’s basketball game Sunday at ETSU Athletic Center.

A crowd of 2,267 watched as the Buccaneers improved to 5-1 on the season, while the Warhawks dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 1-6.

The outcome was never in doubt, as East Tennessee State established dominance from the opening tip. The Buccaneers raced out to a 54-33 halftime lead, shooting a blistering 60 percent from the field in the first half while holding Louisiana-Monroe to just 33 percent shooting. The second half offered no respite for the visitors, with the Buccaneers maintaining their intensity to secure the lopsided win.

The statistical disparity between the two teams was stark. East Tennessee State finished the game shooting 59 percent from the field, connecting on 39 of 66 attempts. They were also potent from beyond the arc, making 11 of 24 three-pointers for a 46 percent clip. Defensively, the Buccaneers stifled the Warhawks, who managed to make only 19 of 57 shots, a 33 percent rate, and just 6 of 27 from three-point range.

East Tennessee State’s offensive execution was nearly flawless, as evidenced by an offensive rating of 139.1, meaning they scored 139.1 points per 100 possessions. Louisiana-Monroe, by contrast, struggled profoundly on that end of the court, posting an offensive rating of just 80.1.

The Buccaneers also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Warhawks 41-28 and grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Louisiana-Monroe’s 7. East Tennessee State’s defense forced 12 turnovers while committing 10 of their own, and they tallied 8 steals and 4 blocks.

The Buccaneers’ attack was a balanced effort, with eight players scoring at least eight points. Allen Strothers, a guard from Newport News, Virginia, led the way with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in just 21 minutes of action. Jaylen Smith, from Ocoee, Florida, provided a spark off the bench with a game-high 15 points and 5 assists.

Other key contributors for the Buccaneers included Brian Taylor of St. Louis, Missouri, with 10 points, and Brayden Crump of Morganton, North Carolina, who added 10 points and 4 rebounds. The team’s depth was on full display as players like Gabe Sisk, Maki Johnson and Cam Morris all chipped in with 9 points apiece.

For Louisiana-Monroe, the lone bright spot was Renars Sondors. The forward from Riga, Latvia, led the Warhawks with 15 points. Lavell Brodnex of Saginaw, Michigan, added 9 points and 5 rebounds.

The game’s opening sequence set the tone. After a slow start for both teams, East Tennessee State found its rhythm with an 8-0 run, capped by a Blake Barkley tip-in layup, to take an early 8-4 lead. The Buccaneers continued to build on their advantage throughout the half, using a 13-2 run midway through the period to extend their lead to 31-15. The lead ballooned to 21 points by halftime after a late three-pointer from Jaylen Smith made it 54-33.

Any hope of a Louisiana-Monroe comeback was extinguished quickly in the second half as East Tennessee State opened with a 7-2 spurt. The Buccaneers’ lead never dipped below 24 points the rest of the way, growing to as many as 42 in the final minutes before settling on the 42-point final margin.

The loss extends a difficult start to the season for Louisiana-Monroe, which has now been outscored by an average of over 18 points per game in its six losses. East Tennessee State, meanwhile, continues its strong early-season form, having won five of its first six contests.
