Kentucky Routs Loyola Maryland in Home Opener
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming force, the Kentucky Wildcats dismantled the visiting Loyola Maryland Greyhounds 88-46 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night before a crowd of 19,764 at Rupp Arena.
The Wildcats, improving to 4-2 on the young season, left no doubt from the opening tip, unleashing a 22-4 run to start the game and effectively decide the contest within the first seven minutes. The Greyhounds, who fell to 2-5, struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Kentucky’s relentless pressure and never threatened.
Kentucky’s dominance was built on a near-perfect start. Otega Oweh set the tone immediately, scoring the game’s first points on a layup just 15 seconds in. The Wildcats’ defense was equally potent, forcing two early Loyola Maryland turnovers and blocking two shots during the opening onslaught. By the first media timeout, Kentucky led 12-2, with Oweh, Collin Chandler, and Kam Williams already finding easy paths to the basket.
The Wildcats continued to pour it on, stretching their lead to 30 points late in the first half. A balanced scoring attack saw six different players contribute to the 50-20 halftime advantage. Kentucky’s ball movement was crisp, and their defensive intensity never wavered, holding Loyola Maryland to a paltry 20 points in the opening period.
While the second half was more subdued, Kentucky maintained its commanding lead. The Wildcats opened the half on an 8-2 spurt, pushing the margin to 36 points and ensuring any notion of a Greyhounds comeback was purely theoretical. Kentucky’s depth was on full display as head coach utilized his bench liberally throughout the final 20 minutes.
Kam Williams led a contingent of six Wildcats who scored in double figures. The 6-foot-8 forward from Lafayette, Louisiana, finished with 13 points and was a consistent force on both ends of the floor. Denzel Aberdeen, a 6-foot-5 guard from Orlando, Florida, orchestrated the offense with six assists to go with his 11 points.
Otega Oweh, a powerful 6-foot-4 guard from Newark, New Jersey, also tallied 11 points, while 7-foot center Malachi Moreno from nearby Georgetown, Kentucky, controlled the paint with 10 points and four blocked shots. Collin Chandler provided a spark off the bench with 13 points, and Jasper Johnson, a hometown product from Lexington, chipped in nine points and five assists.
For Loyola Maryland, the offensive struggles were team-wide. No Greyhounds player reached double-digit scoring. Sebastien Emenalo, from Walton-on-Thames, England, came off the bench to lead the team with six points, while Troy Cicero of Joliet, Illinois, added seven.
The victory gets Kentucky back on track after a tough loss to Michigan State earlier in the week. The Wildcats now look ahead to a challenging stretch that includes a marquee home matchup against North Carolina next Tuesday.
Loyola Maryland, which has now lost three of its last four games, will attempt to regroup when it returns home to face Washington College on Tuesday. The Greyhounds’ early-season schedule has been difficult, with this loss to a power-conference opponent following a 14-point defeat at Duquesne just two days prior.
The game’s outcome was never in question, as Kentucky’s superior size, speed, and skill were evident from the opening possession. The Wildcats shot efficiently from the field and shared the ball willingly, while their defense smothered Loyola Maryland into a night of offensive futility, cementing a decisive victory on their home floor.
