ETSU Routs Morehead State Behind Strong Performances from Morris, Taylor

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a commanding performance at the ETSU Athletic Center on Friday night, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers used a balanced offensive attack and a stifling second-half defense to pull away from the Morehead State Eagles, securing a 77-62 victory in non-conference men’s basketball.

The Buccaneers improved their season record to 4-1, while the Eagles fell to 2-4.

East Tennessee State established control early, building a 38-31 lead by halftime. The Buccaneers then methodically extended their advantage after the break, outscoring Morehead State 39-31 in the second half to seal the win.

The Buccaneers’ offense was fueled by a powerful inside-outside combination. Cam Morris, a 6-foot-8 forward from Alexander City, Alabama, dominated the paint, scoring 22 points on efficient shooting in just 27 minutes of action. He was complemented by guard Brian Taylor of St. Louis, who poured in 21 points over 38 minutes. The duo provided a consistent scoring threat that the Eagles struggled to contain throughout the contest.

Further bolstering the ETSU effort was forward Blake Barkley from Morgantown, West Virginia, who added 12 points, and fellow 6-foot-8 forward Jordan McCullum of Harriman, Tennessee, who contributed 13 points and dished out three assists. The Buccaneers’ ball movement was also facilitated by Allen Strothers, who tallied five assists from his guard position.

Despite the loss, Morehead State was led by a stellar individual performance from Davion Cunningham. The 6-foot-3 guard from Charlotte, North Carolina, was a bright spot for the Eagles, scoring a game-high 21 points and adding three assists in 37 minutes. Josiah LeGree, a 6-foot guard from Baltimore, provided a spark with 13 points off the bench.

The game’s opening minutes were a back-and-forth affair. Morehead State’s LeGree connected on an early three-pointer, but East Tennessee State quickly responded, with Morris and Barkley scoring inside to establish a rhythm. The Buccaneers began to create separation midway through the first half, using a 9-2 run to build a lead they would not relinquish. Taylor and McCullum were instrumental in this stretch, scoring on a variety of drives and jumpers.

Morehead State stayed within striking distance for much of the first half, thanks largely to Cunningham’s ability to create his own shot and get to the free-throw line. A late flurry by the Buccaneers, capped by a McCullum dunk off a Strothers assist just before the halftime buzzer, gave ETSU a seven-point cushion at the break.

The Eagles came out aggressively to start the second half, scoring the first four points to cut the deficit to three. However, that was as close as they would get. East Tennessee State immediately answered with a 7-0 run, re-establishing a double-digit lead and forcing a Morehead State timeout.

From there, the Buccaneers’ defense tightened, and their offensive execution proved too much for the Eagles. ETSU consistently found high-percentage shots, with Morris finishing at the rim and Taylor connecting from the perimeter. Every time Morehead State attempted to mount a comeback, the Buccaneers had a response, often from a different player, preventing any significant shift in momentum.

The victory extends East Tennessee State’s positive start to the season, while Morehead State will look to regroup quickly as both teams continue their non-conference schedules. According to pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, East Tennessee State was a heavy favorite with a 91.6 percent probability to win. The Buccaneers also covered the pregame spread of -11.5, though the total score of 139 fell under the over/under line of 146.5.
