Princeton Pulls Away from Northeastern in Second Half for Home Victory
PRINCETON, N.J. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive struggles and a parade to the free-throw line, the Princeton Tigers pulled away from the Northeastern Huskies for a 70-57 victory in a non-conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at a subdued Jadwin Gymnasium.
The contest was a stark contrast in efficiency, with the Tigers leveraging their opportunities at the charity stripe to overcome a subpar shooting night from the field. Princeton connected on 28 of 37 free throws, a decisive factor in a game where both teams found consistent scoring difficult.
Northeastern’s offensive woes were profound. The Huskies shot a frigid 2 for 19 from three-point range and managed just 11 successful free throws on 18 attempts. Their offensive rating of 83.2 points per 100 possessions underscored a night of frustration, as they converted only 37.3 percent of their field goals overall.
Princeton built its lead in the first half, taking a 33-20 advantage into the break. The Huskies showed more life after halftime, matching the Tigers’ 37-point output in the second period, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
Jacob Huggins led a balanced Princeton scoring attack with 14 points, capitalizing on his trips to the foul line. Dalen Davis and Jack Stanton added 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Malik Abdullahi chipped in 11. The Tigers, despite shooting 40 percent from the field and committing 14 turnovers, controlled the game’s tempo and capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, finishing with an offensive rating of 103.6.
For Northeastern, Xavier Abreu provided a bright spot with a game-high 17 points. Youri Fritz was a force defensively, contributing 16 points and recording four blocked shots for the Huskies. Luca Soroa Schaller facilitated the offense with a team-high four assists to go with eight points.
Despite the loss, Northeastern won several statistical battles. The Huskies dominated points in the paint, 36-20, scored 19 points off Princeton’s turnovers, and tallied 12 fast-break points to Princeton’s five. They also collected 11 offensive rebounds and recorded nine steals. However, their inability to score from beyond the arc and their inefficiency at the free-throw line negated those advantages.
With the result, Princeton evened its season record at 3-3. The Tigers will look to build on the victory when they face Bradley on Monday in Kissimmee, Florida.
Northeastern fell to 2-3 with the loss, snapping a two-game winning streak. The Huskies continue a challenging road stretch with a game at Duquesne on Saturday in Akron, Ohio.
The game’s final score of 127 points fell well below the pregame over/under line of 150.5. Princeton entered the contest as a slight favorite and covered the 1.5-point spread.
