Purdue Remains Undefeated, Topples Memphis in Bahamas Showcase
NASSAU, The Bahamas (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second-half surge, the Purdue Boilermakers remained undefeated, pulling away from the Memphis Tigers for an 80-71 victory Thursday night at Kendal Isaacs National Gymnasium.
Before an announced crowd of 2,437, the Boilermakers used a balanced offensive attack and a strong finish to overcome a gritty Memphis squad and improve their season record to 5-0. The Tigers, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 with the loss in the men’s NCAA Division I basketball game.
The contest was tightly contested for the first 20 minutes, with Purdue taking a narrow 36-35 lead into halftime. The second half, however, belonged to the Boilermakers, who outscored Memphis 44-36 after the break to secure the win. Fletcher Loyer was instrumental in the second-half effort, scoring 20 points to lead all Purdue scorers. His backcourt mate, CJ Cox, added 18 points, while Braden Smith orchestrated the offense with 11 assists.
Memphis was led by a standout performance from guard Dug McDaniel, who finished with 18 points and six assists. Zach Davis contributed 11 points and three assists for the Tigers, and Tariq Ingraham added 10 points off the bench.
The game began at a frantic pace. McDaniel opened the scoring for Memphis with a 3-pointer just seconds after the opening tip. The teams traded baskets for much of the first half, with neither able to build a significant lead. Purdue’s interior presence, led by Oscar Cluff and Trey Kaufman-Renn, provided a consistent counterpoint to Memphis’s perimeter shooting. Cluff finished with 11 points and three blocks, while Kaufman-Renn posted 12 points and four assists.
A key sequence late in the first half saw Purdue build a small cushion. After a technical foul on McDaniel, Fletcher Loyer sank two free throws. On the ensuing possession, Braden Smith drilled a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer, giving the Boilermakers a 36-35 advantage and momentum heading into the locker room.
Purdue carried that momentum into the second half, starting the period on a 12-4 run to establish a nine-point lead. The Boilermakers’ ball movement was sharp, with Smith finding Cox and Loyer for critical 3-pointers that stretched the Memphis defense. The Tigers fought back, with McDaniel and Davis connecting on several possessions to keep the deficit manageable.
Just as Memphis would draw close, Purdue would answer. With just over seven minutes remaining and the Tigers within six points, the Boilermakers executed a crucial 7-0 run, capped by another Loyer 3-pointer, to push their lead to 13 and effectively put the game out of reach. Memphis struggled to find consistent offense down the stretch against a stout Purdue defense, unable to cut the lead to single digits in the final minutes.
The Boilermakers’ depth was also on display. Seven-foot-four center Daniel Jacobsen provided a spark off the bench with six points in just five minutes of action, showcasing the team’s significant size advantage.
The game was part of a multi-team event in The Bahamas.
