Providence at Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showdown at a sold-out Coors Events Center on Friday night, the Colorado Buffaloes outlasted the Providence Friars 97-88 to remain undefeated on the young season.

A second-half surge proved decisive for the Buffaloes, who improved to 3-0. After a tightly contested first half that saw Colorado take a narrow 39-38 lead into the break, the home team erupted for 58 points after halftime. Providence, which fell to 2-2, kept pace for much of the game, scoring 50 of its own in the second half, but could never reclaim the lead.

The game was ultimately won on the strength of Colorado’s efficient offense. The Buffaloes scored 97 points on 81 possessions, an offensive rating of 120.0, and shot 52 percent from the floor, making 34 of their 66 attempts. They were also potent from the free-throw line, converting 23 of 27 attempts.

Providence, while scoring 88 points, was less efficient, posting an offensive rating of 107.7. The Friars struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 6 of 25 three-point attempts, a 24 percent success rate. They did find success at the charity stripe, making 24 of 31 free throws.

Jason Edwards led all scorers for Providence, pouring in 24 points and dishing out 6 assists in 34 minutes of action. Jaylin Sellers added 15 points and 7 rebounds, while Corey Floyd contributed 13 points.

Colorado’s attack was more balanced and potent. Alon Michaeli was a force off the bench, scoring 20 points and grabbing 6 rebounds in just 22 minutes. Elijah Malone dominated inside with 17 points and 7 rebounds. The Buffaloes’ engine was point guard Barrington Hargress, who orchestrated the offense with a double-double of 15 points and 11 assists. Isaiah Johnson also chipped in 15 key points.

A significant factor in the game was Providence’s rim protection, led by Oswin Erhunmwunse, who swatted away 7 Colorado shots. However, the Friars’ defense could not consistently string together stops in the face of the Buffaloes’ efficient, multi-pronged scoring attack.

The game was a tale of two halves, with both teams trading blows in a frantic first period before Colorado seized control after halftime. Despite a valiant effort from Edwards and the Friars, the Buffaloes’ offensive firepower and ability to convert at the free-throw line down the stretch secured the victory in front of 6,596 fans.

Providence will look to return to the win column when it hosts New Hampshire on Tuesday. Colorado, aiming to maintain its perfect start, will face Alabama State at home on Monday.
