Dayton Holds Off UMBC to Remain Undefeated

DAYTON, Ohio (Interstat) — The Dayton Flyers, heavily favored and playing in front of a raucous home crowd, were pushed to the limit but ultimately held off a determined Maryland-Baltimore County squad for a 77-71 victory Saturday afternoon at a sold-out University of Dayton Arena.

An announced crowd of 13,407 watched as the Retrievers, projected by advanced metrics to have only a minuscule chance of victory, refused to be intimidated by the atmosphere or the 23.5-point pregame spread, turning what many expected to be a routine home opener into a tense, back-and-forth contest that was not decided until the final minute.

Dayton improved to 2-0 on the young season, while UMBC evened its record at 1-1.

The game was a tale of contrasting strengths. The Flyers dominated the interior, outscoring the Retrievers 38-24 in the paint and capitalizing more efficiently on their opponents’ mistakes, holding a 17-10 advantage in points off turnovers. UMBC, however, countered with scrappy defense and a more effective transition game, outscoring Dayton 7-4 on fast breaks and staying within striking distance by matching the Flyers’ physicality for long stretches.

Dayton emerged from a competitive first half with a 41-37 lead, but the Retrievers consistently answered every Flyer run in the second period. The game remained a one-possession affair for much of the final ten minutes, with UMBC threatening to pull off a monumental upset.

The Flyers were ultimately saved by a balanced offensive attack and the steady hand of their point guard. Javon Bennett, a 5-foot-11 guard from Orlando, Florida, led Dayton with 16 points and was the engine of the offense, dishing out a game-high seven assists while committing only a single turnover in his 36 minutes on the court. His command of the offense proved critical in navigating UMBC’s persistent defensive pressure.

He was complemented by the efficient play of Keonte Jones, a 6-foot-6 wing from Madison, Wisconsin. Jones logged a team-high 37 minutes and contributed 12 points, three rebounds, an assist and two blocked shots, providing crucial two-way stability. De’Shayne Montgomery added 11 points and six rebounds, while 7-foot-1 French center Amael L’Etang provided a significant presence off the bench, scoring 11 points and pulling down six rebounds in just 20 minutes of action.

For the Retrievers, the standout performance came from their towering Spanish forward, Jose Roberto Tanchyn. The 6-foot-10, 235-pound native of Cordoba was a force in his limited time on the floor, scoring a game-high 16 points and grabbing six rebounds in just 22 minutes. His efficient scoring inside was a primary reason UMBC was able to hang with the more athletic Flyers.

UMBC also received strong contributions from its backcourt. DJ Armstrong, a 6-foot-4 guard from Orlando, Florida, played 34 minutes and scored 15 points to go along with three assists. Ace Valentine, from Columbia, Maryland, filled the stat sheet with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jah’Likai King added 14 points and five rebounds, and Daylon Dickerson chipped in 10 points and five boards, showcasing the Retrievers’ depth and collective effort.

Despite the loss, the performance serves as a significant confidence booster for a UMBC program that opened its season with a 74-53 win over Penn St.-York. The Retrievers demonstrated they can compete with a high-major opponent on the road, a promising sign as they head into a challenging stretch of their schedule. They will look to build on this effort when they travel to face Morgan State on Tuesday.

For Dayton, the game served as an early-season test of its composure. After a dominant 88-48 victory over Canisius to open the season, the Flyers faced unexpected adversity but found a way to win. Coach Anthony Grant will likely point to the team’s interior dominance and ability to score off turnovers as positive takeaways, while also acknowledging the need for sharper execution against a resilient opponent.

The Flyers now turn their attention to a high-profile road test, a Tuesday matchup against intrastate rival Cincinnati. The game against the Bearcats will provide another early measure of this Dayton team’s potential as it navigates a non-conference slate that also includes upcoming games against Marquette, Virginia and Florida State.

The total points scored in the game, 148, fell just short of the over/under line of 152.5, but the real story was the point spread, as UMBC’s gritty performance easily covered the massive 23.5-point pregame line. On this afternoon, the Retrievers, though they fell short on the scoreboard, proved to be every bit the match for the heavily favored Flyers.
