Kentucky Routs Valparaiso in Home Opener Behind Moreno’s Double-Double

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Interstat) — In a dominant display of depth and firepower, the Kentucky Wildcats overwhelmed the Valparaiso Beacons in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday night at Rupp Arena, cruising to a 107-59 victory.

The game, played on November 7, 2025, was never in doubt as the Wildcats, ranked among the nation’s elite, lived up to their billing as heavy pregame favorites. Kentucky improved its early season record to 2-0, while Valparaiso evened its mark at 1-1.

From the opening tip, Kentucky’s superior athleticism and offensive execution were on full display. The Wildcats constructed a double-digit lead within the first ten minutes and continued to build on it relentlessly, entering halftime with a commanding advantage. The second half offered more of the same, as Kentucky’s deep rotation of players maintained a torrid scoring pace, ultimately eclipsing the century mark against an overmatched Valparaiso squad.

The story of the night was Kentucky’s balanced and efficient attack, with six different players scoring in double figures. The Wildcats shared the ball effectively and capitalized on their significant size and skill advantages across all positions.

Leading the charge for the Wildcats was hometown standout Malachi Moreno. The seven-foot center from Georgetown, Kentucky, delivered a commanding performance, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes of action. Moreno also added three assists and a blocked shot, showcasing his versatility and impact on both ends of the floor.

He was complemented by a host of teammates. Otega Oweh, a guard from Newark, New Jersey, led all scorers with 15 points while also contributing five rebounds and three assists. Fellow guards Collin Chandler of Farmington, Utah, and Denzel Aberdeen of Orlando, Florida, provided significant offensive punch. Chandler tallied 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Aberdeen added 12 points and four rebounds.

Kentucky’s frontcourt depth was also a decisive factor. Mouhamed Dioubate, a forward from Queens, New York, matched Chandler’s output with 14 points and five rebounds. Brandon Garrison, a center from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, provided a strong interior presence with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Off the bench, Lexington native Jasper Johnson directed the offense effectively, dishing out a team-high five assists to go with nine points.

For Valparaiso, the contest was a difficult opening road test. The Beacons struggled to find consistent offense against Kentucky’s relentless defensive pressure. Rakim Chaney, a guard from Rockford, Illinois, was a bright spot, leading his team with 15 points and five assists. Shon Tupuola, a forward from Brownsburg, Indiana, battled inside to pull down a team-high eight rebounds and block two shots.

The victory extends Kentucky’s promising start to the season, following a 77-51 win over Nicholls State earlier in the week. The Wildcats now look ahead to a heated in-state rivalry game, traveling to face the Louisville Cardinals on Tuesday, November 11. Their non-conference schedule remains challenging, with upcoming high-profile matchups against Michigan State in New York and a home clash with North Carolina.

Valparaiso, which opened its season with a narrow 66-63 victory over Eastern Illinois, will seek to rebound when it returns home to host Nicholls State on Wednesday, November 12. The Beacons’ schedule includes a tough road test at Marquette in early December.

The game’s outcome was largely anticipated, as statistical models gave Kentucky a 98.10 percent probability of winning. The Wildcats not only covered the substantial pregame point spread but also saw the total combined score fall under the projected over/under line. The lopsided result underscored the gap between a national championship contender and a mid-major program facing one of its most daunting challenges of the season. Kentucky’s depth and talent proved far too much for the visiting Beacons to handle in front of a capacity crowd at Rupp Arena.
