Iowa Hawkeyes Roll Past Robert Morris in Season Opener
IOWA CITY, Iowa (Interstat) — The Iowa Hawkeyes opened their men’s basketball season with a dominant 101-69 victory over the Robert Morris Colonials on Tuesday night at a sold-out Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
A crowd of 9,232 watched as the Hawkeyes, heavily favored to win, wasted little time imposing their will, using a relentless offensive attack and a suffocating defense to turn the game into a rout by halftime and cruise to the 32-point victory. The win improved Iowa’s record to 1-0, while Robert Morris begins its campaign at 0-1.
The game was effectively decided in the first half, as Iowa built a commanding 49-26 lead by the intermission. The Hawkeyes’ offense operated with precision, while their defense smothered the Colonials, creating a disparity that Robert Morris could not overcome. The Colonials showed more fight after the break, scoring 43 second-half points, but the Hawkeyes matched that intensity and then some, pouring in 52 points of their own to ensure there would be no dramatic comeback.
Iowa’s victory was a comprehensive team effort, built on overwhelming advantages in several key statistical categories. The Hawkeyes dominated the interior, outscoring the Colonials 44-22 in the paint. More telling was Iowa’s ability to capitalize on Robert Morris’s mistakes, as the Hawkeyes scored 33 points off turnovers compared to just 7 for the Colonials. Iowa also controlled the tempo, registering 13 fastbreak points while Robert Morris failed to score any.
The Hawkeyes were led by a stellar performance from Bennett Stirtz. The 6-foot-4 guard from Liberty, Missouri, played a team-high 35 minutes, leading all scorers with 19 points while also dishing out 6 assists and recording a block. His command of the offense was a primary driver of Iowa’s efficiency.
He was complemented powerfully by forward Tavion Banks. The Kansas City, Missouri, native made the most of his 19 minutes on the floor, scoring 17 points and grabbing 4 rebounds. His physical presence inside was a constant challenge for the Robert Morris defense.
Adding to the balanced scoring attack was 6-foot-10 forward Alvaro Folgueiras of Malaga, Spain. In just 17 minutes of action, Folgueiras recorded a double-double with 11 points and 5 rebounds, while also contributing 3 assists, showcasing his versatility.
The Hawkeyes’ depth was on full display throughout the contest. Isaia Howard, a 6-foot-5 guard from Plattsburg, Missouri, scored 10 points in 23 minutes. Brendan Hausen, a guard from Amarillo, Texas, also chipped in 10 points off the bench, and Trevin Jirak, a 6-foot-11 forward from West Des Moines, Iowa, nearly reached double figures with 9 points in 13 minutes. Cooper Koch, a 6-foot-8 forward from Peoria, Illinois, added 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in a well-rounded performance.
For Robert Morris, the bright spots were individual efforts in a losing cause. Nikolaos Chitikoudis led the Colonials with a strong performance, falling just short of a double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds in 26 minutes of play. DeSean Goode and Ryan Prather provided secondary scoring, with Goode contributing 11 points and Prather adding 12 points and 3 assists.
The game’s outcome was in line with pregame expectations, as Iowa had been installed as a 19.5-point favorite by oddsmakers. The combined score of 170 points sailed far over the pregame over/under line of 143.5. Interstat’s ELO system had given the Hawkeyes an 81.4 percent probability of victory, a forecast the team fulfilled with authority.
The Hawkeyes will look to build on this opening win when they return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena to host Western Illinois on Friday. Robert Morris, meanwhile, faces a quick turnaround and a challenging road trip, as they are scheduled to travel to face the Drake Bulldogs on Thursday. The Colonials’ early season schedule remains difficult, with upcoming games against Monmouth, Illinois-Chicago, and Southern Utah later in November before Horizon League play begins in earnest in December and January. Iowa’s schedule intensifies in mid-November with a home matchup against Xavier, followed by a neutral-site game against Mississippi in Palm Desert, California, and the start of Big Ten Conference play on the road at Michigan State on Dec. 2.
