Converse at East Tennessee State
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — The East Tennessee State Buccaneers opened their season with a commanding 102-50 victory over Converse in a non-conference men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Tuesday night at a sparsely attended ETSU Athletic Center.
From the opening tip, the Buccaneers established a dominant presence, quickly building a double-digit lead and never looking back. A stifling defensive effort forced numerous Converse turnovers in the game’s opening minutes, which East Tennessee State converted into easy transition baskets. The home team’s offensive execution was relentless, leading to a 56-23 advantage at halftime.
The second half saw more of the same, as the Buccaneers continued to share the ball and capitalize on their significant size and skill advantages, outscoring Converse 46-27 after the break to secure the 52-point win.
East Tennessee State’s offense was a model of balance and efficiency, with multiple players contributing significant performances. Jordan McCullum led all scorers with 18 points, adding four rebounds. Milton Matthews provided a potent spark off the bench, scoring 14 points, while Brayden Crump recorded a double-double with 12 points and five rebounds. Brian Taylor also reached double figures with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and a block.
The Buccaneers’ depth was on full display as Blake Barkley scored 11 points and Jonathon Pickering controlled the glass, pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. The team’s ball movement was exceptional, with Allen Strothers and Maki Johnson each dishing out five assists, and Jaylen Smith adding three assists to go with his seven points and five rebounds.
Converse struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against the Buccaneers’ pressure. The visitors were plagued by turnovers and difficult shot attempts throughout the contest, unable to mount a significant challenge.
The victory gives East Tennessee State a 1-0 start to the season. The Buccaneers will look to build on this performance when they travel to face Presbyterian on Saturday. Converse, which was playing its season opener, will continue its schedule with a game against San Francisco State at UC Santa Barbara, also on Tuesday.
