East Tennessee State Routs Converse in Season Opener
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a dominant season-opening performance Tuesday night, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers overwhelmed the visiting Converse team, cruising to a lopsided victory at a sparsely attended ETSU Athletic Center.
The Buccaneers left no doubt about the outcome from the opening tip, erupting for 56 first-half points while holding Converse to just 23, establishing a commanding 33-point lead by halftime. The second half offered more of the same, with East Tennessee State maintaining its offensive efficiency and defensive pressure to secure the 102-50 win in a non-conference men’s NCAA Division I basketball game.
A crowd of 1,378 watched as the Buccaneers showcased a deep and balanced offensive attack, with six players scoring in double figures. The victory propelled East Tennessee State to a 1-0 record to start the young season, while Converse, a program that faced a significant challenge against a Division I opponent, continued its difficult early-season schedule.
Jordan McCullum led all scorers with a game-high 18 points, adding four rebounds and an assist in 20 minutes of action. His efficient scoring paced a Buccaneers offense that consistently found high-percentage shots.
Close behind was Milton Matthews, who provided a potent spark off the bench. Matthews poured in 14 points and grabbed three rebounds in just 14 minutes on the court, demonstrating the depth of the East Tennessee State roster.
The frontcourt was anchored by a strong performance from Brayden Crump, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and five rebounds in 16 minutes. His presence in the paint was felt on both ends of the floor.
Brian Taylor also made significant contributions across the stat sheet, finishing with 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot during his 17 minutes of play. His all-around game exemplified the team’s cohesive performance.
The Buccaneers’ ball movement was crisp throughout the contest, facilitated by Allen Strothers and Maki Johnson. Strothers dished out a team-high five assists to go along with four points and two rebounds, while Johnson added three assists, six points and five rebounds, showcasing the team’s unselfish style.
Blake Barkley provided another offensive jolt from the bench, scoring 11 points in a mere 10 minutes of play, further highlighting the team’s scoring depth. Jaylen Smith and Gabe Sisk also filled their roles effectively; Smith tallied seven points, five rebounds and three assists, and Sisk added seven points, four rebounds and two assists.
Defensively, the Buccaneers were relentless, forcing Converse into difficult shots and controlling the glass. Jonathon Pickering was a force on the boards, pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds to go with four points, ensuring Converse had few second-chance opportunities.
For Converse, the night was a struggle against the size, speed, and skill of a Division I program. The team managed 23 points in the first half and improved slightly to 27 in the second, but could never mount a challenge against the relentless Buccaneers. The game was part of a challenging opening stretch for Converse, which, like many small schools, faced a series of tough road games against larger opponents to begin the season.
Looking ahead, the East Tennessee State Buccaneers will hit the road for their next contest, traveling to face Presbyterian on Saturday. The team’s early schedule includes a home game against Northern Kentucky on Nov. 12 and a road trip to North Alabama on Nov. 15.
Converse, meanwhile, continues its season as part of a slate of games featuring non-Division I opponents facing off against larger programs across the country. The result was indicative of the challenging nature of such matchups, where depth and athleticism often prove to be the deciding factors. The Buccaneers utilized their entire roster to great effect, sending a clear message as they begin their 2025-26 campaign.
