High Point Looks to Extend Dominance in Rematch at Longwood
FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The surging High Point Panthers aim to solidify their hold on the Big South Conference when they visit the Longwood Lancers in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball rematch Saturday at Willet Hall.
High Point (18-4, 7-1 Big South), which boasts the league’s best overall record, enters on a high note after a 93-83 road victory at Radford last Friday. The Panthers’ only conference loss came at Winthrop on Jan. 14. They previously handled Longwood, 80-67, at home on Jan. 3.
The Panthers are powered by guard Terry Anderson, who is coming off a 31-point, five-assist performance against Radford. In the first meeting with Longwood, Anderson torched the Lancers for 29 points and eight rebounds. His scoring prowess has been a constant, averaging 24.5 points over his last four games.
Longwood (12-11, 4-4) seeks to split the season series and rebound from a 65-60 loss at South Carolina Upstate on Thursday. The Lancers have shown resilience at home, including an overtime win over Charleston Southern last week. Forward Elijah Tucker leads the charge, averaging 17.5 points over his last four contests. He was held to eight points in the first matchup with High Point.
The Lancers will need a stronger defensive effort to contain High Point’s potent offense, which averages 86.2 points per game. Longwood has alternated wins and losses over its past six games and will look to protect its home court, where it is 8-3 this season.
Saturday’s contest is a critical conference matchup as the regular season enters its final month. High Point looks to maintain its momentum toward a league title, while Longwood aims to climb the standings and secure a more favorable seeding for the upcoming Big South tournament.
Tip-off is set for Saturday afternoon in Farmville.
