High Point Rides Defense, Anderson’s 22 Points to Road Win Over Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The High Point Panthers used a dominant defensive first half and a relentless offensive performance from Terry Anderson to secure a 71-59 victory over the Longwood Lancers in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at a packed Willet Hall.

High Point, which entered the game with a 19-4 record, never trailed and improved to 20-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Longwood fell to an even 12-12 and 5-4 in the Big South.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the opening period, where High Point’s defense suffocated the Lancers into submission. The Panthers forced 10 first-half turnovers, converting them into 13 points, while holding Longwood to just 21 points on 29% shooting from the field. High Point’s active hands led to seven steals in the half, setting a tone of disruption that Longwood never fully solved. The Lancers finished with 17 turnovers against only two assists for the entire game, a staggering ratio that underscored High Point’s defensive pressure.

Anderson, the Panthers’ leading scorer, was the engine for the offense, finishing with a game-high 22 points. He attacked the rim consistently, drawing fouls and converting 8 of 9 attempts from the free-throw line. His performance came on the heels of a 31-point outing at Radford earlier in the week, cementing his status as the conference’s premier scorer.

He was supported by a balanced effort. Owen Aquino, the 6-foot-8 forward from Madrid, Spain, provided 12 points and seven rebounds, while guards Braden Hausen and Rob Martin each added 10 points. Martin also contributed four assists. Vincent Brady chipped in 10 points off the bench, including two first-half three-pointers that helped stretch the Panther lead.

Longwood, which shot just 41.5% for the game, was led by Redd Thompson’s 16 points, though he committed six turnovers. Johan Nziemi added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Emanuel Richards scored 10 points. The Lancers struggled to find any offensive rhythm, their two total assists highlighting a afternoon of stagnant, individual play against High Point’s swarming defense.

Despite the lopsided first half that ended with High Point leading 31-21, Longwood showed fight after the break. A 7-0 Lancer run early in the second half, capped by a driving layup from Emanuel Richards, cut the deficit to 33-28 and prompted a timeout from High Point coach Alan Huss.

The Panthers responded immediately. Out of the stoppage, Anderson found Aquino for a layup to halt the run. Then, after a Longwood miss, Anderson drew a foul and hit two free throws. On the ensuing possession, a steal by Scotty Washington led to a three-pointer from Hausen, pushing the lead back to 40-28 and effectively extinguishing Longwood’s threat. The Lancers would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

High Point’s efficiency was notable. The Panthers scored 71 points on 62 possessions, an offensive rating of 114.6, while holding Longwood to a rating of 94.7 on the same number of trips. High Point also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 17 of 21 attempts compared to Longwood’s 7 of 9.

The victory completed a regular-season sweep for High Point, which defeated Longwood 80-67 on Jan. 3. The Panthers have now won seven of their last eight games as they continue to sit atop the Big South standings.

Longwood, which had won three of its last four coming in, will look to regroup on the road at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday. High Point returns home to face Charleston Southern the same afternoon, aiming to protect its conference lead.
