Utah Valley at Tarleton State
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — A Western Athletic Conference rematch with postseason implications is set for Thursday night when the Utah Valley Wolverines visit the Tarleton State Texans at Wisdom Gym.
Utah Valley (15-6) enters with a strong overall record but has stumbled recently, dropping two straight, including a 78-71 overtime loss at California Baptist on Jan. 24. The Wolverines will look to regain momentum and complete a regular-season sweep of Tarleton State, having won the first meeting 91-85 on Jan. 1 in Stephenville.
The Texans (11-9), meanwhile, seek to end a four-game skid and avenge that earlier loss on their home floor. Their most recent defeat was a 71-64 setback at Texas-Arlington on Jan. 21.
A key matchup will feature two of the WAC’s top scorers. Utah Valley’s Isaac Davis is coming off an 18-point performance in 23 minutes against California Baptist and has been a consistent offensive threat, including a 23-point outing in a win over Utah Tech on Jan. 10. In the Jan. 1 win over Tarleton, Davis contributed 6 points in 10 minutes.
For Tarleton State, guard Camron McDowell has been a bright spot during the losing streak, averaging over 20 points per game in conference play. He torched Utah Valley for 26 points in the first matchup and scored 25 in a narrow loss at Utah Tech on Jan. 17.
The Wolverines have shown a potent offense, scoring 90 or more points four times this season. Containing that attack will be a primary challenge for a Texans defense that allowed 105 points in a recent overtime loss at Southern Utah.
With both teams looking to solidify their positioning in the WAC standings, Thursday’s contest offers Utah Valley a chance to right the ship and Tarleton State an opportunity to halt its slide and protect its home court in a critical mid-conference clash.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.
