Utah Valley Dominates Second Half to Rout Tarleton State
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a commanding wire-to-wire performance, the Utah Valley Wolverines delivered a decisive 83-55 victory over the Tarleton State Texans in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at Wisdom Gym.
The Wolverines, who led by three at halftime, unleashed a stifling defensive effort in the second half, holding the Texans to just 23 points after the break. Utah Valley’s offense, efficient and balanced, shot 55.6% from the field and a near-perfect 93.8% from the free-throw line to pull away.
The most important part of the game was Utah Valley’s immediate and overwhelming response to start the second half, which extinguished any lingering hope for the home team. After leading 35-32 at halftime, the Wolverines opened the final period on a decisive 16-5 run over the first six and a half minutes. This surge, fueled by defensive stops and transition opportunities, pushed their lead to 51-37 and established a tone of dominance that Tarleton State could not challenge. The Texans never came closer than 12 points the rest of the way as the Wolverines methodically expanded their advantage.
Trevan Leonhardt, a 6-foot-4 guard from Kaysville, Utah, led all scorers with 20 points for Utah Valley. He added three assists and a block in 30 minutes. Forward Isaac Davis, a 6-8 sophomore from Idaho Falls, Idaho, provided a potent offensive spark off the bench, scoring 17 points on efficient shooting in just 19 minutes of action.
The Wolverines also received a significant contribution from reserve center Isaac Hawkins. The 6-10 freshman from Fort Mill, South Carolina, recorded 10 points and four blocked shots, anchoring the team’s interior defense.
For Tarleton State, Camron McDowell of Griffin, Georgia, finished with 12 points. Kaia Isaac, a native of Christchurch, New Zealand, added 13 points for the Texans, but the team struggled mightily from the field, making only 15 of 53 attempts for a 28.3% shooting percentage.
Utah Valley’s defensive pressure was a constant, generating 12 steals and eight blocks. The Wolverines also dominated points in the paint, outscoring Tarleton State 38-16, and held a significant 18-4 advantage in fastbreak points.
The win improved Utah Valley’s season record to 16-6 overall. The Wolverines have now won two of their last three games. Tarleton State fell to 11-10 with the loss, snapping a brief two-game home winning streak in conference play.
The announced attendance was 2,267.
Utah Valley entered the game as a 5.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, a margin they covered with ease. The combined score of 138 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 156.5.
The two teams will meet again in Orem, Utah, on Feb. 26. Utah Valley’s next game is at home against Abilene Christian on Feb. 5. Tarleton State returns to action at home against Utah Tech on Jan. 31.
