High Point Pulls Away From South Carolina Upstate in Second Half

HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of efficiency and defensive pressure, the High Point Panthers pulled away in the second half to defeat the South Carolina Upstate Spartans 89-69 in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Qubein Arena.

A crowd of 4,790 watched as the Panthers, now 17-4 overall, turned a narrow four-point halftime lead into a lopsided victory, outscoring the Spartans 54-38 after the break. The loss dropped South Carolina Upstate to 9-11.

The game’s defining stretch came early in the second half. Leading 44-42 with just over 15 minutes remaining, High Point unleashed a decisive 14-2 run over the next three and a half minutes. The surge was fueled by stifling defense and unselfish offense. Conrad Martinez converted a three-point play, Chase Johnston hit a 3-pointer off an Owen Aquino assist, and Terry Anderson capped the run with a layup, pushing the Panthers’ lead to 58-44.

South Carolina Upstate never recovered. The Panthers’ defense, which forced 15 turnovers while committing only five, consistently generated transition opportunities. High Point finished with eight steals and seven blocks, led by Aquino’s five rejections, which set a disruptive tone from the game’s opening possession.

The statistical disparity told the story of High Point’s dominance. The Panthers scored 89 points on just 68 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 130.9, while holding the Spartans to 69 points on 70 possessions for a rating of 99.1. High Point shot 50% from the field (32 of 64) and shared the ball effectively with 18 assists. In stark contrast, the Spartans managed only two assists for the entire game, shooting 38.1% (24 of 63) from the floor.

Terry Anderson led all scorers with 22 points for High Point, adding three assists and two steals. Rob Martin provided 18 points and three assists, while Chase Johnston came off the bench to score 15 points, all from beyond the arc. The Panthers’ most impactful performance may have come from Owen Aquino of Madrid, Spain. The 6-foot-8 forward filled the stat sheet with eight points, seven assists and five blocks, orchestrating the offense and anchoring the defense.

South Carolina Upstate was led by Learic Davis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who scored 17 points. Carmelo Adkins of Lubbock, Texas, added 15 points and three assists. The Spartans kept the game close early, trailing just 35-31 at halftime, thanks to a 16-8 advantage in offensive rebounds. However, their inability to take care of the ball and find open shooters against High Point’s pressure proved insurmountable.

The Panthers, who entered the game with a 97.4% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, validated that projection with a comprehensive performance. They have now won five of their last six conference games. South Carolina Upstate, coming off an overtime road win at Charleston Southern, saw its momentum halted.
