Hawaii at UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — A pivotal early-season Big West men’s basketball showdown is set for Saturday when the UC San Diego Tritons host the Hawaii Warriors at RIMAC Arena.

Both teams enter with identical 11-2 overall records, establishing this as a critical conference matchup. The winner will seize early momentum in the league race.

Hawaii arrives riding a five-game winning streak, most recently dismantling UC Riverside 88-45 on Thursday. The Warriors have been dominant defensively, holding their last three opponents under 62 points. A key catalyst is forward Isaac Johnson, who is coming off an efficient 18-point performance in 22 minutes against the Highlanders. Over his last five games, Johnson has provided consistent scoring and shot-blocking.

UC San Diego has won four of its last five, with its only loss in that span a narrow 82-80 defeat to San Diego on Dec. 19. The Tritons’ offense has been potent, averaging 84 points in their last three victories. Guard Leo Beath powers the attack, coming off an 18-point, 4-assist effort in a rout of Stanton on Dec. 28. Beath had a season-high 21 points and 6 assists against Tulane on Dec. 13, showcasing his scoring and playmaking ability.

The matchup inside will be crucial. Hawaii’s length, led by Johnson, will be tested by a balanced UC San Diego frontcourt. The Tritons’ backcourt, featuring Beath and Jaden Vance, who scored 16 points in the last outing, must handle Hawaii’s defensive pressure.

This contest marks the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams, with the rematch scheduled for Feb. 7 in Honolulu. Saturday’s result will provide an early statement in a conference race that appears wide open.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at RIMAC Arena on the UC San Diego campus.
