High Point Overwhelms Averett in Record-Setting Home Victory

HIGH POINT, N.C. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming offensive firepower and suffocating defense, the High Point Panthers dismantled the visiting Averett Cougars 127-52 in a non-divisional men’s NCAA basketball game Saturday night at a raucous Qubein Arena.

From the opening tip, the Panthers established a pace and intensity that the Division III Cougars simply could not match. High Point’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, scoring 55 points in the first half before exploding for 72 more in the second, while their defense forced a staggering 22 turnovers.

The game was effectively decided in the opening minutes. After Averett’s Zach Skogen scored the game’s first points on a layup, High Point responded with a 6-0 run and never looked back. The Panthers’ pressure was relentless, converting 22 steals into 46 points off turnovers. They also dominated the interior, outscoring Averett 74-12 in the paint and adding 56 fastbreak points, showcasing a transition game that left the Cougars scrambling.

High Point’s offensive rating of 151.2 on 84 possessions underscored a historically efficient performance. The Panthers shot a remarkable 70.3 percent from the floor, connecting on 45 of 64 attempts. They were also effective from beyond the arc, making 8 of 17 three-pointers, and capitalized on their trips to the free-throw line, going 29 for 40.

The Panthers shared the ball brilliantly, tallying 22 assists as a team, and controlled the glass with a commanding rebounding effort that included 10 offensive boards.

Terry Anderson led the charge for High Point with an impactful performance off the bench. The forward scored 16 points in just 17 minutes of play, also contributing three rebounds, three assists and a block. His energy on both ends of the floor was a catalyst for the Panthers’ dominant runs.

Braden Hausen, a 6-foot-7 forward from Amarillo, Texas, filled the stat sheet with a team-high six rebounds and five assists to go with three points. Guard Chase Johnston provided a scoring spark with 12 points, including two three-pointers, in his 20 minutes on the court.

For Averett, the struggle was evident across the board. The Cougars managed just 22 points in the first half and 30 in the second against High Point’s relentless defensive schemes. They were held to a mere 12 points in the paint and managed only six fastbreak points, highlighting the Panthers’ control of the game’s tempo and geography.

The victory, played before an announced crowd of 4,872, pushes High Point’s early-season record to a perfect 2-0. The Panthers are riding a wave of momentum after a 97-71 victory over Furman on Monday.

High Point now looks ahead to a busy stretch, hosting Jacksonville on Tuesday before hitting the road to face UAB on Friday.

The game was a comprehensive demonstration of High Point’s depth and system, as they methodically built upon their lead with contributions from the entire roster until the final buzzer confirmed the lopsided result.
