Robert Morris Pulls Away From IU Indy in Horizon League Matchup
COROPOLIS, Pa. (Interstat) — Ryan Prather scored 20 points and Darius Livingston added 14 off the bench as Robert Morris pulled away in the second half for a 74-58 victory over IU Indy in a Horizon League men’s basketball game Wednesday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center.
The Colonials, who led 36-33 at halftime, used a decisive 13-2 run midway through the second period to turn a competitive contest into a comfortable win, avenging an overtime loss to the Jaguars just 13 days prior.
The game’s pivotal sequence began with Robert Morris clinging to a 51-47 lead. After a Ta’Zir Smith steal led to a Livingston layup, the Colonials forced consecutive IU Indy turnovers, converting them into a Nikolaos Chitikoudis tip-in and a Livingston 3-pointer. The burst, capped by another Smith steal and two DeSean Goode free throws, extended the lead to 62-47 with just over seven minutes remaining and effectively sealed the outcome.
IU Indy, which had stunned Robert Morris 96-93 in overtime in Indianapolis on Jan. 15, could not replicate that offensive magic. The Jaguars shot poorly from the field and committed 15 turnovers, which the Colonials converted into 19 points.
Robert Morris improved to 14-9 overall and strengthened its position in the conference standings. IU Indy dropped to 6-17, suffering its second straight loss since a win over Oakland last week.
Prather, a 6-foot-5 guard from Clarksburg, Maryland, was efficient throughout, adding four assists in 32 minutes. Livingston, a 6-foot-2 guard from Orlando, Florida, provided a critical spark, hitting four 3-pointers. Smith contributed 11 points and three assists for the Colonials.
Micah Davis led the Jaguars with 18 points and four assists. Reece Hagy added nine points and a block off the bench, while Finley Woodward dished out five assists.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Robert Morris built an early 11-5 advantage before IU Indy responded with an 8-0 run. The Colonials closed the half strong, taking their three-point lead into the break after a Smith 3-pointer in the final two minutes.
The second half started with Robert Morris quickly pushing its lead to nine points. While IU Indy managed to trim the deficit to four on a few occasions, the Jaguars could never string together enough stops or scores to reclaim the lead, setting the stage for the Colonials’ game-breaking run.
Chitikoudis and Goode each scored nine points for Robert Morris, with Chitikoudis pulling down nine rebounds. The Colonials shared the ball effectively, registering 18 assists on 28 made field goals.
Attendance was 1,023 at the Sewall Center.
The win gave Robert Morris a split of the season series. According to Interstat’s ELO system, the Colonials entered the game with a 95 percent probability to win.
IU Indy travels to face Youngstown State on Friday. Robert Morris visits Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday.
