UC Davis at Long Beach State
LONG BEACH, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging UC Davis looks to solidify its position in the Big West Conference standings when it visits struggling Long Beach State on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid.
The Aggies (17-12) enter the matchup having won five of their last seven games, while the 49ers (9-21) have lost eight of their last ten. The game is a rematch of a Feb. 14 contest in Davis, which UC Davis won decisively, 71-54.
UC Davis is led by guard Marcus Wilson, who is coming off a 25-point performance in a narrow 77-73 home loss to Hawaii on Feb. 26. Wilson torched the 49ers for 18 points, six assists, four rebounds and two blocks in the first meeting this season. Over his last seven games, he is averaging 19.3 points and 3.6 assists.
Long Beach State will counter with high-scoring guard Gavin Sykes, who is in the midst of a spectacular individual stretch. Sykes erupted for a career-high 39 points in the 49ers’ last outing, an 88-87 road win at Cal State Bakersfield on Feb. 28. He followed a 28-point game three days prior and averaged 27.5 points over his last two contests. Sykes scored 18 points in the first game against UC Davis this season.
The Aggies’ recent success has been fueled by efficient offense, scoring 78 or more points in four of their last five wins. Beyond Wilson, forwards Niko Rocak and Carl Daughtery have provided consistent secondary scoring.
Long Beach State, despite its record, has shown a recent ability to score in bunches, putting up 88 and 92 points in two of its last three games, though defensive struggles persist. The 49ers have allowed an average of 86.3 points over their last three contests.
Thursday’s game is the final regular-season home contest for Long Beach State. UC Davis will look to complete the season sweep before traveling to face UC Irvine on Saturday. Long Beach State visits Hawaii on Saturday to close its regular season.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at the Walter Pyramid.
