Morgan State Edges Coppin State in Tight Baltimore Rivalry

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — In a tense, back-and-forth battle that came down to the final seconds, the Morgan State Bears edged the Coppin State Eagles 70-66 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at a packed Hill Field House.

An announced crowd of 3,071 watched as the Bears, led by a game-high 20 points from guard Alfred Worrell, survived a furious late rally and a series of crucial defensive stands to sweep the season series from their crosstown rival. The victory improved Morgan State to 14-15 overall, while Coppin State fell to 7-23.

The game’s defining sequence, and its most important part, unfolded in the chaotic final ten seconds. With Morgan State clinging to a 67-66 lead after Coppin State’s Torrin Andrews converted a driving layup with 23 seconds left, the Eagles had a chance to take the lead or tie. On the ensuing inbound play, Morgan State’s defensive pressure forced a critical turnover. Eugene Alvin, who was a force all night with 14 points and five blocked shots, stole the ball near midcourt and was immediately fouled with just two seconds remaining.

Alvin made the first free throw to extend the lead to 68-66 but missed the second. Coppin State’s Demariontay Hall secured the defensive rebound, giving the Eagles one last desperate chance. However, any hope for a miracle was extinguished when Coppin State’ Khali Horton was called for an offensive foul on the inbounds pass, turning the ball back over to Morgan State with 1.1 seconds left. Worrell was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to seal the four-point victory, a finish that encapsulated the game’s physical and defensive nature.

The contest was a grind from the outset, with neither team able to establish a significant advantage. The first half was a showcase of defense and missed opportunities, particularly for Coppin State, which saw several shots at the rim rejected by Alvin. The Bears took a narrow 34-32 lead into halftime, thanks largely to a late flurry from Worrell, who hit two three-pointers in the final 68 seconds.

Morgan State appeared to seize control early in the second half, building a 13-point lead at 45-32 after a Walter Peggs three-pointer with 14:48 to play. Peggs finished with 13 points. But the Eagles, demonstrating the resilience they have shown in recent close conference games, chipped away. A 9-0 run, capped by a Baasil Saunders dunk off a feed from Jamari Piercy, brought Coppin State back to within 45-41 and set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Coppin State’s effort was led by a balanced scoring attack. Hassan Perkins, Torrin Andrews, and Demariontay Hall each scored 14 points, with Hall adding four blocks. Andrews also contributed 14 points for the Eagles. For Morgan State, Elijah Davis provided a key spark off the bench with 10 points and three assists, helping to offset Coppin State’s interior defense.

The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ first meeting on Jan. 31, a 89-80 offensive shootout won by Morgan State. This rematch was defined by defense, effort plays, and ultimately, the Bears’ ability to make the critical plays in the final moments. The victory keeps Morgan State in the middle of the MEAC standings as the regular season concludes, while Coppin State’s search for a consistent winning formula continues despite another gritty performance.
