Alabama State Edges Alabama A&M in SWAC Thriller
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a game defined by razor-thin margins and a frantic final minute, Micah Simpson’s season-high 24 points propelled Alabama State to a dramatic 89-88 victory over rival Alabama A&M in a Southwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball thriller Saturday night before a raucous crowd of 6,569 at T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
The most critical sequence unfolded in the closing 30 seconds with the Hornets clinging to a one-point lead. Alabama A&M, seeking a go-ahead basket, ran a play for its own star, Koron Davis, but his driving attempt was thwarted by a double-team. The ensuing scramble led to a critical turnover by Kintavious Dozier, stolen by Alabama State’s Jerquarius Stanback with 46 seconds remaining.
Alabama State then worked the clock down before Tyler Byrd found Tyler Mason for a layup with 26 seconds left, pushing the lead to 89-88. The Bulldogs had two final chances to win. Davis missed a three-pointer, but James Graham secured the offensive rebound and called timeout with 4.4 seconds left. Out of the timeout, a miscommunication on the inbounds pass resulted in another Dozier turnover, sealing the heartbreaking defeat for the home team and a cathartic road win for the Hornets.
The contest was a statistical anomaly of efficiency, with both teams shooting over 57% from the field and 47% from three-point range. Alabama A&M actually held a slight edge in offensive rating, scoring 131.6 points per 100 possessions to Alabama State’s 128.1, but the Hornets’ advantage at the free-throw line proved decisive. Alabama State converted 16 of 20 attempts, while the Bulldogs missed nine, going 16 of 25.
Simpson, a guard from Morristown, Tennessee, rebounded emphatically from a three-game offensive slump. After averaging just 6.7 points over his previous three contests, he was aggressive from the opening tip, scoring 13 of his points in the first half. His backcourt leadership steadied the Hornets as they built a 50-44 halftime lead.
Davis, a dynamic guard from Gary, Indiana, matched Simpson’s brilliance for Alabama A&M, finishing with a game-high 26 points. He was supported by Bilal Abdur-Rahman, who tallied 13 points and four assists, and Jalen Carruth, who added 16 points off the bench.
Alabama State’s interior presence, however, provided crucial balance. Tyler Mason contributed 20 points on efficient 9-of-12 shooting, often scoring at key moments to stem Bulldog runs. Tyler Byrd added 12 points, including the assist on the game’s final field goal.
The game was a tale of two halves stylistically. The first was a track meet, with Alabama State’s 50 points fueled by 60% shooting. The second half became a grinding, physical affair with 10 lead changes and neither team able to secure more than a five-point advantage.
Alabama A&M’s defense, which entered the game forcing turnovers at a high rate, was neutralized as both teams committed only eight turnovers apiece. The battle on the glass was equally even, with Alabama A&M holding a slight 7-6 edge in offensive rebounds.
With the victory, Alabama State improved to 10-18 overall and avenged a 73-69 home loss to the Bulldogs on Jan. 19. Alabama A&M, which had been projected as a 68.8% favorite by Interstat’s ELO system, fell to 16-13.
The win provides a significant momentum boost for the Hornets as they head into the final week of the regular season. Alabama A&M, meanwhile, must regroup quickly with the conference tournament looming, the sting of a missed opportunity at home likely to linger.
