Akron Pulls Away From Buffalo in Second Half for MAC Victory
AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive second-half surge, the Akron Zips solidified their position atop the Mid-American Conference with a 99-85 victory over the Buffalo Bulls on Tuesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.
A crowd of 2,323 watched the Zips, now 21-5 overall, use a blistering 60-point second half to pull away from a Buffalo team that kept pace for the opening 20 minutes. The win completed a regular-season sweep for Akron, which had defeated Buffalo 82-63 on Jan. 20.
The most critical phase of the contest came early in the second half, when Akron transformed a narrow 39-35 halftime lead into a commanding double-digit advantage. The Zips opened the final period on a 13-4 run, fueled by transition baskets and stifling defense. Evan Mahaffey, who finished with 20 points, scored seven points during that stretch, including a layup and free throw just 19 seconds into the half after forcing a turnover. This explosive start set the tone, as Akron’s offensive rating of 121.1 points per 100 possessions proved too much for Buffalo to overcome.
Tavari Johnson, Akron’s standout guard from La Grange Park, Illinois, led all scorers with 23 points and added five assists, continuing a run of stellar performances. He was supported by a balanced attack that saw four other Zips score in double figures: Evan Mahaffey (20 points), Amani Lyles of Columbus (19 points), Shammah Scott of Cleveland (13 points) and Eric Mahaffey of Cincinnati (13 points, five assists).
Buffalo, which fell to 16-11, was led by a game-high 28 points from Ryan Sabol of Washington, D.C. Angelo Brizzi of Warrenton, Virginia, added 23 points, and Daniel Freitag of Bloomington, Minnesota, contributed 16 off the bench. The Bulls fought tenaciously, particularly on the offensive glass where they secured 14 rebounds, but could not match Akron’s shooting accuracy.
The Zips connected on 55.2% of their field goal attempts (32 of 58) and were nearly flawless from the free throw line, making 26 of 29 attempts (89.7%). In contrast, Buffalo struggled from the field, shooting just 36.8% (25 of 68) and 27.3% from three-point range (9 of 33). While the Bulls attempted more free throws, making 26 of 33, their inability to score consistently from the field against Akron’s defense was the decisive factor.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Buffalo’s defense forced 10 Akron turnovers, but the Zips closed the period on a high note, with Shammah Scott draining a three-pointer just before the buzzer to take a four-point lead into the break. That momentum carried directly into the second half, where Akron’s superior shot-making and ball security—committing only six turnovers after halftime—sealed the victory.
Akron, which entered the game as a heavy favorite according to national metrics and betting lines, has now won four consecutive games. Buffalo saw its two-game winning streak snapped. The Zips will travel to face rival Kent State on Saturday, while Buffalo returns home to host Central Michigan.
