Morgan State at Coppin State
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — A pair of struggling Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rivals seeking momentum will meet Saturday when the Morgan State Bears visit the Coppin State Eagles at the Coppin State Physical Education Complex.
Morgan State (8-13) enters on a modest upswing, having won three of its last four games, including a dramatic 79-78 road victory at Norfolk State on Monday. The Bears are led by the hot hand of guard Alfred Worrell, who poured in 33 points in that win. Over his last three games, Worrell is averaging 26.3 points, showcasing his ability to carry the offensive load.
Coppin State (3-18) looks to halt a four-game skid, most recently a 103-76 loss at Norfolk State on Jan. 24. The Eagles have shown flashes in conference play, with three of their losses by six points or fewer. Guard Hassan Perkins has been a consistent contributor, scoring in double figures in three of the last four contests.
While both teams have endured difficult seasons, their first matchup of the year represents a critical opportunity. The Bears have found a rhythm in MEAC play, going 4-2 in their last six conference games. The Eagles’ lone conference win was a 53-51 defensive battle at Delaware State on Jan. 3.
The game will be the first of a home-and-home series to close the regular season, with the rematch scheduled for March 5 at Morgan State. History suggests a tight contest; last season, the teams split their two meetings, each winning on their home floor.
For Coppin State, success will likely hinge on containing Worrell and finding scoring beyond Perkins, possibly from Demariontay Hall, who had 16 points in the last outing. Morgan State will rely on Worrell’s scoring burst and support from Elijah Davis and Rob Lawson, who combined for 25 points and 10 assists against Norfolk State.
Tipoff is set for Saturday, Jan. 31, in Baltimore.
