Morgan State Holds Off Coppin State Rally for Conference Road Win
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Alfred Worrell scored 24 points and Morgan State built a commanding early lead before holding off a furious second-half rally from crosstown rival Coppin State for an 89-80 victory in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Coppin State Physical Education Complex.
The visiting Bears (9-13, 4-3 MEAC) seized control from the opening tip, racing out to a 13-point lead less than seven minutes into the game and never looking back in the first half. Morgan State’s aggressive defense and efficient offense produced a 45-32 halftime advantage, capitalizing on Coppin State’s early shooting struggles and turnovers.
Worrell, a guard from Washington, D.C., was the catalyst, finishing with 24 points, five rebounds and four assists in 30 minutes. His performance continued a torrid scoring stretch, following games of 33, 23 and 23 points in his last three outings. He was supported by a balanced attack as Walter Peggs added 18 points, Eugene Alvin scored 13 with five rebounds and two blocks, and Elijah Davis orchestrated the offense with 15 points and seven assists.
The most important part of the game, however, was Coppin State’s relentless second-half surge that turned a potential blowout into a tense conference battle. The Eagles (3-19, 2-5), who have struggled throughout the season, emerged from the locker room with renewed energy, opening the second period on a 17-6 run to cut the deficit to just two points at 51-49 with 15:03 remaining.
Coppin State’s comeback was fueled by improved ball movement and shot-making, particularly from guards Hassan Perkins and Camaren Sparrow. Perkins finished with 10 points and six assists, while Sparrow, a Baltimore native, provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and six rebounds. Forward Taj Thweatt was a force inside, recording 11 points and eight rebounds.
Each time the Eagles threatened to take the lead or tie the game, Morgan State had an answer. When Coppin State closed to within 57-54 on a Khali Horton three-pointer, Worrell responded with a driving layup and a free throw. When the Eagles pulled to 63-59 on a Thweatt tip-in, Worrell buried a critical three-pointer to push the lead back to seven.
The Bears finally created decisive separation with a 9-2 run over a two-minute span late in the game. With Morgan State leading 71-68, Worrell hit another three-pointer, Marland Harris threw down a dunk off a Worrell assist, and Elijah Davis converted a layup to extend the advantage to 78-68 with just over two minutes to play. Coppin State could not mount another significant challenge, as Morgan State closed the game at the free-throw line.
Morgan State’s Christian Meeks contributed a game-high nine rebounds, helping the Bears to a 42-38 edge on the glass. Coppin State’ Demariontay Hall led the Eagles with 12 points.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,396, was a contrast in halves. Morgan State shot 51.5 percent from the field in the first half while holding Coppin State to 32 percent. The Eagles flipped the script after halftime, shooting 48 percent and outscoring the Bears 48-44, but the early hole proved too deep to escape.
With the win, Morgan State improved to 4-3 in MEAC play and secured its third consecutive victory, following narrow road wins at Howard and Norfolk State. Coppin State’s losing streak extended to three games.
Interstat’s ELO system had given Morgan State a 62.8 percent probability to win, and the Bears covered the pregame spread of 1.5 points. The combined score of 169 points went well over the over/under line of 154.5.
Morgan State next hosts Maryland-Eastern Shore on Feb. 7, while Coppin State will welcome Delaware State on the same date. The two Baltimore rivals are scheduled to meet again in the regular-season finale at Morgan State on March 5.
