Gauchos Use Turnovers, Fast Breaks to Pull Away From Titans

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos used a dominant second-half surge fueled by defensive pressure to pull away from the Cal State Fullerton Titans for an 83-69 victory in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at the Thunderdome.

A crowd of 2,584 watched the Gauchos improve to 15-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play, while the Titans fell to 10-13 and 4-5. The win avenged a 95-84 loss to Fullerton in the teams’ first meeting just one month prior.

The game’s decisive stretch came early in the second half. Leading 38-29 at halftime, UC Santa Barbara opened the final period with a 15-4 run over the first five minutes to establish a commanding 53-33 advantage. The Gauchos’ defense was the catalyst, forcing five Titan turnovers during that span and converting them into easy transition opportunities. For the game, UC Santa Barbara scored 25 points off 15 Fullerton turnovers, compared to just 10 points off turnovers for the Titans.

Colin Smith led a balanced Gauchos attack with 13 points, while CJ Shaw added a team-high 17 points. Miro Little provided a strong all-around performance with 12 points and six assists, and Marvin McGhee chipped in 14 points. The Gauchos shot 48.3% from the field and were efficient from the free-throw line, making 14 of 17 attempts.

Cal State Fullerton was paced by a game-high 18 points from Kiwane Garris, who scored 16 of his points in the second half in a spirited effort to keep the Titans within reach. Josh Ward added 10 points. The Titans struggled offensively, shooting 43.6% from the field and posting an offensive rating of just 92.6 points per 100 possessions. They were also hampered on the glass, being outrebounded 10-4 on the offensive end, which led to a 13-2 disadvantage in second-chance points for the game.

The first half was a sloppy affair for both teams, featuring 19 combined turnovers. UC Santa Barbara built its nine-point halftime lead despite shooting just 3-of-16 from three-point range in the period, relying instead on interior scoring and free throws. The Gauchos found their rhythm after the break, shooting 50% from the field in the second half and connecting on 8-of-17 from beyond the arc to steadily extend their lead, which grew as large as 22 points.

UC Santa Barbara’s depth and defensive intensity proved too much for the Titans. The Gauchos’ bench outscored Fullerton’s 29-18, and their 13 steals matched a season-high, consistently disrupting the Titans’ offensive flow. The Gauchos also held a significant advantage in fast-break points, 19-11.

The victory solidifies UC Santa Barbara’s position in the upper tier of the Big West standings as the conference season reaches its midpoint. Cal State Fullerton, which had won three of its last four coming into the game, will look to regroup after a performance where their offensive execution faltered against one of the league’s more formidable defenses.

UC Santa Barbara travels to face UC Davis on Thursday. Cal State Fullerton returns home to host UC Riverside on Thursday.
