Stony Brook Topples Campbell in Colonial Athletic Association Matchup

LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — Andrej Shoshkikj scored 19 points and Erik Pratt added 19 more as Stony Brook used a decisive second-half surge to secure an 81-69 road victory over Campbell in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s basketball game Thursday night at John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center.

The Seawolves, who led by five at halftime, methodically pulled away after the break, holding the Fightin’ Camels to 33 second-half points. The win improved Stony Brook to 13-9 overall and marked its third victory in the last four games. Campbell fell to 9-13.

The most critical stretch of the contest came early in the second half. After Campbell’s DJ Smith hit a 3-pointer and a subsequent free throw to cut Stony Brook’s lead to 46-45 with 17:25 remaining, the Seawolves responded with a 12-4 run over the next five minutes. The spurt was fueled by interior play and defensive stops. Richard Goods, who finished with 15 points, ignited the run with a 3-pointer assisted by Shoshkikj. After a Campbell miss, Shoshkikj drove for a layup. Following another defensive rebound by Goods, Pratt found Shoshkikj for another 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 57-49 and forcing a Campbell timeout.

Campbell, which had been installed as a six-point favorite pregame, could not mount a sustained response. The Fightin’ Camels drew within four points on several occasions but each time Stony Brook answered. A key sequence occurred with just over seven minutes left when Goods scored on a putback and, following a Campbell miss, finished an emphatic dunk in transition off a Pratt assist to extend the lead to 62-58. The Seawolves’ defense then locked in, holding Campbell without a field goal for over three minutes while building a double-digit cushion.

Stony Brook’s efficiency proved decisive. The Seawolves shot 49.2% from the field and converted 9 of 21 attempts from beyond the arc. They also dominated the glass, outrebounding Campbell 10-5 on the offensive end, leading to 13 second-chance points. Campbell shot 42.9% overall and was hampered by 8-of-22 shooting from 3-point range.

Smith led all scorers with 20 points for Campbell. Jeremiah Johnson added 15 points and Muneer Newton contributed 12. The Fightin’ Camels’ offense, however, struggled to find consistency against Stony Brook’s defense, committing eight turnovers and recording only six assists.

Shoshkikj, a guard from Skopje, Macedonia, filled the stat sheet beyond his scoring, adding five assists and three steals in 34 minutes. Pratt, from Lake Worth, Florida, matched Shoshkikj’s 19 points and also dished out five assists. Jonah Butler provided a vital spark off the bench for Stony Brook with 10 points.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Stony Brook built an early advantage behind Pratt, who scored eight of the Seawolves’ first 13 points. Campbell responded with a 10-2 run, capped by consecutive 3-pointers from Tasos Cook and Johnson, to take a 13-10 lead. The teams traded baskets for much of the period until Stony Brook closed the half on a 7-2 mini-run, including a driving layup from Pratt just before the buzzer, to take a 41-36 lead into the locker room.

The victory defied the pregame analytics, as Campbell had been projected with a 67.1% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system. The combined score of 150 fell just short of the over/under line of 151.5.

Stony Brook continues its road trip with a game at Elon on Saturday. Campbell will travel to face William & Mary on Saturday.
