Cal State Fullerton at Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — Two Big West Conference men’s basketball teams seeking momentum will meet Saturday when Cal State Fullerton visits Cal Poly at Robert Mott Gym.
The Titans (8-12, 2-3 Big West) and Mustangs (7-12, 2-3) enter the contest with identical league records, both looking to rebound from losses in their last outings. The matchup is a quick rematch of a Dec. 4 thriller, which Cal Poly won 94-91 in Fullerton.
Cal State Fullerton is led by guard Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro, who is averaging 16.3 points over his last six games. He scored 17 points in the Titans’ 72-81 loss at UC Riverside on Jan. 17. The Titans have shown offensive firepower, scoring 88 or more points in three of their eight wins, but have struggled with consistency, particularly on the road where they are 2-8 this season.
Cal Poly counters with its own high-scoring guard in Hamad Mousa. The sophomore is averaging 24.0 points per game over his last five contests, including a 34-point outburst in a narrow loss at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 8. The Mustangs are 6-4 at home this season and will rely on that home-court advantage to snap a two-game skid.
Both teams have faced challenging non-conference slates, contributing to their sub-.500 overall records. The game will likely hinge on which backcourt can control the tempo. The Titans will aim to push the pace, while the Mustangs will look to feed Mousa in favorable matchups.
The winner will climb above .500 in Big West play and gain valuable positioning ahead of the conference tournament in March. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST on Saturday, Jan. 24.
