Titans Ride Efficient Offense, Mustangs’ Turnovers to Big West Road Victory

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and opportunistic offense, the Cal State Fullerton Titans avenged an early-season loss by dominating the Cal Poly Mustangs 93-78 in a Big West Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Robert Mott Gymnasium.

The Titans, who fell to the Mustangs by three points in December, turned the tables with a stifling defensive performance that generated 18 Cal Poly turnovers. Fullerton converted those mistakes into 19 points while surrendering only eight points off its own eight turnovers. The Titans also recorded 10 steals, led by the all-around play of guard Josh Ward.

Cal State Fullerton established control early, building a 46-34 halftime lead behind efficient offense and disruptive defense. The Titans maintained a double-digit advantage for nearly the entire second half, with the Mustangs never drawing closer than nine points after the break.

The most pivotal sequence occurred midway through the first half with Fullerton holding a narrow lead. Over a span of several possessions, Cal Poly committed four consecutive turnovers. The Titans capitalized, sparking a 12-2 run that extended their lead to 32-18. This stretch, fueled by active hands in the passing lanes and rushed decisions by the Mustangs, effectively set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Cal Poly struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm against Fullerton’s pressure.

Josh Ward, a guard from Memphis, Tennessee, led the Titans with a stat-stuffing performance of 18 points, seven assists and three blocks in 34 minutes. His backcourt partner, Christian Williams of St. Louis, poured in a game-high 26 points. The Titans’ interior presence was bolstered by Kendrick De Luna and Landon Seaman, who each added 10 points.

Cal Poly was led by Cayden Ward of Stockton, who scored 20 points. Hamad Mousa of Doha, Qatar, contributed 15 points and five assists, while Jackson Mosley added 15 points. Despite making 13 three-pointers, the Mustangs’ offense was hampered by its inability to take care of the ball, finishing with a season-low three assists against 18 turnovers.

Statistically, the Titans were more efficient, posting an offensive rating of 126.8 points per 100 possessions compared to Cal Poly’s 103.8. Fullerton shot 46.9% from the field and made 21 of 26 free throws. The Mustangs shot 43.5% overall but were out-assisted 10-3.

The victory improves Cal State Fullerton’s record to 10-12 overall. Cal Poly falls to 7-14. An announced crowd of 2,318 watched the game.

Cal State Fullerton next plays at UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 31. Cal Poly travels to face Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 29.
