Southern Utah at California Baptist
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — A struggling Southern Utah team aims to halt a five-game skid when it visits a surging California Baptist in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at CBU Events Center.
The Thunderbirds (4-12, 0-2 WAC) are coming off an 89-72 road loss at Utah Valley on Thursday. Southern Utah has not won since a non-conference victory over West Coast Baptist on Dec. 1.
California Baptist (11-6, 1-1) opened its conference home schedule with an 84-72 win over Utah Tech on Thursday. The Lancers have won three of their last four games.
A key matchup will feature Southern Utah’s Jaiden Feroah against CBU’s Devon Malcolm. Feroah, a consistent contributor, is averaging 9.0 points and 2.0 blocks over his last five games. He scored 14 points with five assists in the loss to Utah Valley.
Malcolm provides explosive scoring off the bench for the Lancers. He erupted for 20 points in just 16 minutes in the win over Utah Tech, showcasing his ability to change a game quickly.
Southern Utah’s offense will lean on Feroah, Jalen Lee (15 points vs. Utah Valley) and Dylan Jones (13 points). The Thunderbirds will need to improve defensively after allowing an average of 82.2 points during their losing streak.
California Baptist counters with a more balanced and efficient attack. Alongside Malcolm, Dominique Daniels (20 points vs. Utah Tech) and Martel Williams (17 points, 4 assists) are primary options. The Lancers are 7-2 at home this season.
The Lancers won both meetings last season. Following this game, Southern Utah hosts Tarleton State on Jan. 15, while California Baptist travels to face Abilene Christian on the same date.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST at the 5,050-seat CBU Events Center.
