Lancers Edge Thunderbirds in Defensive Struggle
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by grit than grace, the California Baptist Lancers narrowly escaped an upset bid by the struggling Southern Utah Thunderbirds, securing a 58-55 victory in a Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at a tense CBU Events Center.
The contest, witnessed by 3,438 fans, was a defensive slog from the opening tip. Both teams combined to shoot under 32% from the field, with the Lancers hitting just 21 of 68 attempts and the Thunderbirds managing only 20 of 57. The three-point line offered little relief, as the teams combined to make 11 of 43 long-range attempts. The difference ultimately came down to a handful of critical plays in the final minute and a standout performance from California Baptist guard Dominique Daniels.
Daniels, a 5-foot-10 guard from Compton, California, shouldered the offensive load for the Lancers, scoring a game-high 20 points. His driving layup with 3 minutes, 36 seconds remaining gave California Baptist a 51-44 lead, its largest of the second half, and seemed to put the game out of reach. But Southern Utah, which entered the game with a 4-12 record and was projected by analytics to have just a 6% chance to win, refused to capitulate.
The Thunderbirds mounted a furious comeback, sparked by forward Jaiden Feroah. The 6-foot-9 sophomore from Draper, Utah, led Southern Utah with 16 points and was a constant presence inside. His three-pointer with 1 minute, 40 seconds left, assisted by Tanner Hayhurst, cut the deficit to 56-55, setting up a dramatic finish.
After Daniels split a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 57-55 with 41 seconds left, Southern Utah had a chance to tie or take the lead. The possession resulted in a missed three-pointer by Cale Barclay, but the Thunderbirds retained possession on an offensive rebound with 31 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Southern Utah worked the ball to Barclay again, whose dunk attempt was fouled by California Baptist’s Jonathan Griman with 19 seconds on the clock.
Barclay, who finished with 9 points, calmly sank both free throws to knot the score at 57-57, completing the Thunderbirds’ comeback from a seven-point deficit.
The Lancers inbounded the ball to Daniels, who was immediately fouled by Elijah Duval with 15 seconds left. Daniels, who had missed three of his previous four free-throw attempts in the half, stepped to the line and made the first to put California Baptist ahead 58-57. He missed the second, but the long rebound was tipped and controlled by the Lancers’ Jayden Jackson, forcing Southern Utah to foul again.
Jackson, who contributed 13 points, missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 11 seconds left, giving the Thunderbirds a final chance. Southern Utah advanced the ball and called a timeout with 4.4 seconds remaining to set up a final play. The inbounds pass went to Hayhurst on the wing, but his contested three-point attempt as time expired missed the mark, preserving the narrow victory for the home team.
Beyond Daniels’ scoring, California Baptist relied on its defense and rebounding to overcome a poor shooting night. The Lancers forced 11 Thunderbird turnovers, converting them into key transition opportunities, and dominated the offensive glass with 18 rebounds, leading to 16 second-chance points. Thomas Ndong and Bradey Henige provided crucial interior play, combining for 15 points and 12 rebounds.
For Southern Utah, the loss was a familiar story in a difficult season, dropping them to 4-13 overall and 0-2 in WAC play. Despite the defeat, the Thunderbirds showed significant fight, particularly on defense where they blocked six shots and held California Baptist to an offensive rating of just 89.2 points per 100 possessions. Duval added 8 points and 3 assists for Southern Utah, while Hayhurst chipped in 9 points.
California Baptist improved to 12-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Lancers will look to build on the win as they continue WAC play on the road at Abilene Christian next Thursday. Southern Utah returns home to host Tarleton State next Thursday, seeking its first conference victory.
The game’s most critical sequence occurred in the final 20 seconds. After Barclay’s clutch free throws tied the game, Daniels drew a foul and made the first of two free throws to break the tie. The subsequent missed free throw took an advantageous bounce for the Lancers, with Jackson securing the crucial offensive rebound. That possession not only drained precious seconds but also forced Southern Utah to foul again, ultimately denying the Thunderbirds a final possession with a chance to win and instead leaving them with a desperate heave to tie as time expired.
