Mississippi Outlasts Missouri in Tight SEC Contest

UNIVERSITY, Miss. (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference clash defined by offensive droughts and critical defensive stands, the Mississippi Rebels outlasted the Missouri Tigers 76-69 on Saturday night at The Pavilion at Ole Miss.

A crowd of 7,859 watched as the Rebels, improving to 9-7 overall, leveraged a decisive advantage in points off turnovers and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to secure the victory. Missouri, which entered the game with a 12-3 record, fell to 12-4 despite a valiant effort.

The game’s most pivotal sequence unfolded in the final minute, transforming a one-possession contest into a two-possession Mississippi lead. With Missouri trailing 71-69 and 22 seconds remaining, Tigers star Mark Mitchell was fouled and calmly sank both free throws to tie the game. On the ensuing inbound, Missouri’s Anthony Robinson immediately fouled Mississippi’s AJ Storr, sending him to the line with 16 seconds left. Storr, a rock from the stripe all night, made both free throws to put the Rebels back ahead 73-71.

Missouri’s attempt to answer ended in a rushed, off-balance three-point attempt by Trent Pierce that missed with seven seconds left. Missouri was then forced to foul Malik Dia, who made one of two free throws to extend the lead to 74-71. After a Missouri timeout, the Tigers’ inbounds pass was deflected and Robinson again fouled Dia, who made both free throws with three seconds left to effectively seal the game at 76-71.

The final minute capped a game where Mississippi consistently capitalized on Missouri’s mistakes. The Rebels scored 18 points off 12 Missouri turnovers, while the Tigers managed only nine points off six Rebel giveaways. Mississippi also shot 15 of 19 from the free-throw line, a stark contrast to Missouri’s 12-of-24 performance from the charity stripe.

Missouri started the game with purpose, jumping to an early 7-2 lead behind quick baskets from Shawn Phillips and Anthony Robinson. The Tigers maintained a slight edge for much of the first half, with their lead peaking at five points on several occasions. Jayden Stone’s hot shooting from beyond the arc, where he hit three first-half threes, helped Missouri counter Mississippi’s interior presence.

However, the Rebels closed the first half on a significant run. Trailing 36-34 with under a minute to play, Mississippi’s Malik Dia drilled a three-pointer to give the Rebels their first lead since the opening basket. Missouri’s Mitchell answered with a deep three of his own at the buzzer, sending the Tigers into halftime with a slim 37-36 advantage.

The second half became a grind, with both teams struggling to find consistent offensive flow. Mississippi slowly built a working margin, taking a 58-53 lead with just over nine minutes to play after a pair of AJ Storr free throws. Missouri repeatedly fought back to within one or two possessions, but could never regain the lead. Each time the Tigers threatened, Mississippi responded with a key basket, often from Storr or Dia, or a defensive stop that led to points.

Storr led all scorers with 26 points for Mississippi, showcasing an efficient all-around game. Dia was a force inside, finishing with 21 points, three blocks and several crucial rebounds. Ilias Kamardine facilitated the offense with four assists.

For Missouri, Mitchell led the way with 20 points and seven assists, demonstrating his all-conference caliber. Stone added 16 points, while Phillips provided 12 points and a strong defensive presence in the paint. The Tigers dominated points in the paint, 34-24, but their 29.2% shooting from three-point range and 50% mark from the free-throw line proved too much to overcome.

The win gives Mississippi a positive start to the SEC schedule and a key Quadrant 2 victory. Missouri, coming off an impressive road win at Kentucky, will look to rebound from its second loss in three games as it continues a challenging conference slate.

Mississippi next travels to face Georgia on Wednesday. Missouri returns home to host Auburn, also on Wednesday.
