Roberts Leads Penn Past Brown in Ivy League Showdown

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a game defined by its physicality and a decisive disparity at the free-throw line, the Penn Quakers outlasted the Brown Bears 81-73 in an Ivy League men’s basketball contest Saturday afternoon at The Palestra.

The game, played before a crowd of 1,325, was a tale of two halves that were statistically identical for long stretches but ultimately decided by Penn’s ability to draw fouls and convert at the charity stripe. The teams were deadlocked at 42 at halftime, but Penn’s second-half efficiency, particularly from the line, created a separation Brown could not overcome.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded over a tense four-minute stretch late in the second half. With Penn leading 71-67 and just over four minutes remaining, Brown’s offense stalled. The Bears committed two turnovers and missed two three-point attempts on consecutive possessions. Meanwhile, Penn star Ethan Roberts, who finished with a game-high 28 points, drew a foul on a three-point attempt and sank two free throws. After a Brown layup, Roberts then hit a difficult turnaround jumper to push the lead to 75-69 with 3:11 left.

Brown guard Adrian Uchidiuno, who had 15 points, answered with a clutch three-pointer to cut the deficit to 75-72, but that was as close as the Bears would get. On the ensuing possession, Penn worked the shot clock and, after a missed shot, secured a critical offensive rebound. The Quakers then drew another foul, with Roberts making one of two free throws. Penn’s defense then forced a Brown turnover, leading to two more Roberts free throws, effectively sealing the game by extending the lead to 78-72 with just 38 seconds remaining.

Roberts, a 6-foot-5 forward from Arlington Heights, Illinois, was the catalyst for Penn throughout. In addition to his 28 points, he added four rebounds and five assists in 34 minutes, consistently creating offense either for himself or for teammates. His backcourt partner, Michael Zanoni, provided crucial support with 20 points, including three three-pointers.

Brown was led by the interior presence of N’famara Dabo, who scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Guards Jeremiah Jenkins and Adrian Uchidiuno each added 15 points, with Jenkins also contributing six assists. The Bears battled evenly in most facets, shooting a slightly higher percentage from the field (48.3% to 46.4%) and committing only two more turnovers.

The decisive statistical gap came at the free-throw line. Penn attempted 29 free throws, making 22, while Brown went to the line only 12 times, converting eight. That 14-point advantage from the line directly accounted for the final margin of victory. Penn’s offensive rating of 119.5 points per 100 possessions, compared to Brown’s 106.3, underscored their more efficient scoring night.

Penn also won the battle on the offensive glass, securing 10 rebounds to Brown’s seven, which led to several key second-chance opportunities during their decisive late run.

With the win, Penn improves to 8-7 overall and evens its early Ivy League record. The Quakers had been installed as a 3.5-point pregame favorite, and the total score of 154 surpassed the over/under line of 143.5. Brown falls to 5-9 on the season.

Penn next travels to face Dartmouth on Jan. 17, while Brown returns home to host Columbia on the same date.
