Kentucky at Alabama
Preview: Kentucky Wildcats at Alabama Crimson Tide
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — A high-stakes Southeastern Conference men’s basketball opener features two ranked teams with potent offenses as Kentucky visits Alabama on Saturday at Coleman Coliseum.
The Wildcats (9-4) and Crimson Tide (10-3) both ride three-game winning streaks into the matchup. Kentucky’s surge, which includes wins over Indiana and Saint John’s, followed a four-game stretch where it lost three times, including a 35-point defeat to Gonzaga. Alabama’s streak features a potent offensive display, averaging 99.3 points per game in wins over South Florida, Kennesaw State and Yale.
A key matchup will be Kentucky’s interior defense against Alabama’s perimeter firepower. Wildcats forward Mouhamed Dioubate has been a force, averaging 13.3 points over the last three games. He scored 20 points with five rebounds and three blocks in Kentucky’s most recent outing, a 99-85 win over Bellarmine on Dec. 23.
Alabama’s offense runs through guard Aden Holloway, who has been exceptional during the win streak. He is averaging 22.3 points and 4.0 assists over the last three contests, including a 26-point, 7-assist performance in the 102-78 win over Yale on Monday.
Kentucky’s offense, which averages 82.2 points, will test an Alabama defense allowing 80.2 points per game. Beyond Dioubate, the Wildcats have found balance, with Kam Williams scoring 26 and Otega Oweh posting a near triple-double (10 points, 8 rebounds, 10 assists) against Bellarmine.
Alabama’s high-tempo system, which leads the nation in scoring at 94.2 points per game, will face a Kentucky team that has held its last three opponents to 70 points or fewer. The Crimson Tide’s three losses have come against top-tier opponents: Purdue, Gonzaga and Arizona.
This contest begins a critical SEC slate for both teams. Kentucky’s next game is at home against Missouri on Jan. 7. Alabama continues its homestand against Texas on Jan. 10.
Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. EST Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN.
