Army Outlasts Binghamton in Overtime Thriller
WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive fireworks and a dramatic collapse, Ryan Curry scored 23 points and Jaxson Bell added 24, including a critical overtime three-pointer, to lead Army to a 95-85 victory over Binghamton in a nonconference men’s basketball game Tuesday afternoon at Christl Arena.
The Black Knights, who improved to 6-7, needed a monumental rally to force the extra session after squandering a 16-point second-half lead. The Bearcats, falling to 3-11, dominated the paint and capitalized on Army mistakes to storm back, only to be outscored 19-9 in overtime.
The most important sequence of the game came in the final minute of regulation, with Binghamton having completed its comeback. After Zyier Beverly’s dunk gave the Bearcats a 76-74 lead with 20 seconds remaining, Army’s Jackson Furman missed a potential game-tying jumper. The rebound caromed out of bounds off Binghamton, however, giving the Black Knights a final chance with 6.6 seconds left. Following a timeout, the inbounds play found Bell in the corner, and the junior guard drained a clutch three-pointer with 4.2 seconds on the clock to put Army ahead 77-76. Binghamton’s Jeremiah Quigley then drove the length of the floor and was fouled on a layup attempt with 0.4 seconds left. He made the first free throw to tie the game but missed the second, sending the contest to overtime tied at 77.
Army seized control immediately in the extra period, winning the opening tip and scoring on a Furman layup. The Black Knights never trailed again, opening overtime on a 14-2 run fueled by Bell’s second three of the closing minutes and six free throws from Curry. Binghamton, which had expended significant energy in its comeback, managed only two field goals in the five-minute period.
The game’s narrative was one of starkly contrasting halves and statistical extremes. Army built its large lead on the strength of exceptional three-point shooting, finishing 14 of 28 from beyond the arc. Binghamton, conversely, struggled mightily from deep, making just 4 of 20 attempts. The Bearcats compensated by dominating inside, outscoring Army 50-30 in the paint and attempting 22 free throws to Army’s 30, making 17.
Curry, a guard from Montgomery, New Jersey, filled the stat sheet for Army with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in 43 minutes. Bell, from Indianapolis, was the primary beneficiary of Curry’s playmaking, hitting 6 of his 11 three-point attempts on his way to a game-high 24 points. Tate Laczkowski provided nine points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench.
Binghamton was led by a stellar performance from point guard Jeremiah Quigley. The sophomore from Accokeek, Maryland, played 42 minutes and recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 assists, though he committed six turnovers. Jackson Benigni added 19 points, while Wes Peterson contributed 18 points and six rebounds. Zyier Beverly provided a strong interior presence off the bench with 14 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes.
The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Binghamton taking a 32-30 lead into the break. Army exploded out of halftime, using a 25-9 run to build a 55-41 advantage. The Black Knights extended their lead to 67-51 with just over nine minutes remaining before the Bearcats began their methodical rally. Binghamton’s defense intensified, forcing Army into 12 turnovers for the game, which they converted into 19 points. A 25-10 run over the final eight minutes of regulation, capped by Beverly’s dunk, set the stage for the frantic finish and Bell’s game-saving three.
The loss extends a difficult stretch for Binghamton, which has now dropped eight of its last nine games. Army, which had lost five of its previous six, secured a needed victory before entering Patriot League play. The Black Knights will travel to face Lehigh on New Year’s Eve. Binghamton returns home to host Elmira on Monday.
