Portland Routs Long Beach State Behind Efficient Offensive Display

PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Portland Pilots delivered an offensive masterclass, shooting a blistering 70 percent from the field to overpower the Long Beach State 49ers 93-73 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at a sparsely attended Chiles Center.

The Pilots improved to 5-3 on the season, while the 49ers’ struggles continued, dropping their record to 1-6.

From the opening tip, Portland’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency. The Pilots built a 42-35 halftime lead and then exploded for 51 points in the second half, consistently finding high-percentage shots against a porous Long Beach State defense. Portland’s offensive rating of 129.1 points per 100 possessions underscored a nearly flawless performance, while the 49ers managed a rating of just 99.3.

The starkest difference came from the floor. Portland connected on 35 of their 50 shot attempts. They were equally effective inside and out, scoring 54 points in the paint and making 6 of 12 from three-point range. They also capitalized at the free-throw line, converting 17 of 19 attempts.

Long Beach State, by contrast, shot 43 percent from the field, making 26 of 60 attempts. They were hampered by a cold night from beyond the arc, hitting just 7 of 26 three-pointers.

The Pilots’ attack was a balanced and international affair, led by the backcourt duo of Joel Foxwell and Timo George. Foxwell, a guard from Melbourne, Australia, filled the stat sheet with 19 points and seven assists, directing the offense with precision. George, a forward from Amsterdam, Netherlands, matched Foxwell’s scoring output with 19 points of his own, adding four assists and two blocks in just 23 minutes of action.

They were complemented by forward Matus Hronsky of Zavazna Poruba, Slovakia, who scored 16 points, and fellow Australian big man James O’Donnell, who chipped in 15 points off the bench. Mikah Ballew, a guard from Palmdale, California, contributed seven points and four assists, serving as a key facilitator.

For Long Beach State, the lone bright spot was the individual effort of Petar Majstorovic. The forward from Sombor, Serbia, battled throughout, scoring a game-high 23 points. Christian Jones added 12 points and Cole Farrell finished with 13, but the 49ers could not find enough consistent offense to keep pace.

Despite forcing 15 Portland turnovers, the 49ers could not overcome their own offensive inefficiency and a significant disparity in ball movement. Portland dished out 16 assists on their 35 made baskets, while Long Beach State managed only four assists for the entire game. The Pilots also dominated the transition game, outscoring the 49ers 17-9 in fastbreak points.

The game was never in serious doubt in the second half as Portland methodically extended its lead. A key sequence early in the period saw the Pilots push a seven-point halftime advantage to 15 points, with Foxwell and George orchestrating the run that put the game out of reach.

The victory keeps Portland undefeated at home this season, while Long Beach State continues to search for answers on the road. The 49ers will look to end their skid when they host San Diego on Sunday. Portland travels to face Stanford on Monday.
