Montana State holds off Long Beach State for road victory

LONG BEACH, Calif. (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth contest defined by offensive efficiency and timely defensive stops, the Montana State Bobcats secured a 78-72 victory over the Long Beach State 49ers in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at the Walter Pyramid.

A crowd of 1,808 saw the Bobcats (3-4) overcome a narrow halftime deficit by executing more effectively on both ends of the floor in the second half, handing the struggling 49ers (1-5) their fifth consecutive loss.

The game was a tale of two halves, with Long Beach State taking a slim 37-35 lead into the break. The Bobcats, however, emerged from the locker room with renewed purpose, outscoring the 49ers 43-35 in the final period to seal the road win.

Montana State’s success was rooted in superior offensive execution. The Bobcats scored 78 points on 71 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 109.8. Long Beach State, by comparison, managed 72 points on 72 possessions for an offensive rating of 99.9. The Bobcats shot 48.3 percent from the field, connecting on 28 of 58 attempts, while the 49ers finished at 45 percent, making 27 of 60 shots.

The three-point line was a key differentiator. Montana State hit 8 of 22 from beyond the arc, while Long Beach State was limited to just 5 makes on 14 attempts. Both teams were efficient from the free-throw line, with the Bobcats making 14 of 19 and the 49ers converting 13 of 17.

Defensively, Montana State’s activity created problems. The Bobcats recorded seven steals and forced 11 Long Beach State turnovers, while committing only eight of their own. That +3 turnover margin proved crucial in a tight game. The 49ers held a slight edge on the offensive glass, grabbing seven rebounds to Montana State’s four.

Gavin Sykes led all scorers, carrying the offensive load for Long Beach State with 24 points. Shaquil Bender provided a significant spark off the bench for the 49ers, adding 17 points.

Montana State countered with a more balanced scoring attack. Jeremiah Davis was highly efficient, scoring 15 points in just 24 minutes of action. Chris Hodges contributed 14 points and dished out three assists, while Jed Miller filled the stat sheet with 12 points, three assists, a block, and a steal. Patrick McMahon and Davian Brown also reached double figures, scoring 10 and 13 points respectively, with Brown’s points coming off the bench.

The first half was a tightly contested affair featuring eight lead changes. Montana State opened an early lead, but Long Beach State responded with a 10-2 run to take control midway through the period. The 49ers maintained a small advantage for much of the half, but the Bobcats stayed within striking distance, setting the stage for their second-half push.

Montana State quickly erased the deficit after halftime, using a 7-0 run to seize the lead. The Bobcats never trailed again, though the 49ers stayed within a single possession for much of the half. A critical sequence occurred with just over nine minutes remaining when a steal by Miller led to a fast-break layup from Davis, extending the Bobcat lead to five and forcing a Long Beach State timeout.

Every time the 49ers threatened, Montana State had an answer. A three-pointer by Sykes cut the lead to two with just over a minute to play, but the Bobcats closed the game out at the free-throw line, with Miller and others making key shots to secure the six-point victory.

The win gives Montana State a winning streak as they head into their next contest at Utah State on Nov. 29. Long Beach State will look to snap its skid when it travels to face Portland on Nov. 26.
