Western Illinois at California Baptist
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (Interstat) — Dominique Daniels scored 22 points and Martel Williams added 15 as California Baptist remained undefeated with a 69-59 victory over winless Western Illinois in a non-conference men’s basketball game Friday night at CBU Events Center.
The Lancers improved to 3-0, while the Leathernecks fell to 0-4.
Despite a game-high 29 points from Western Illinois’ Antwaun Massey, California Baptist used a decisive rebounding advantage and a more efficient offensive performance to pull away in the second half. The Lancers dominated the glass with 20 offensive rebounds, leading to numerous second-chance opportunities, while the Leathernecks managed just three offensive boards.
The game was closely contested for much of the first half, with California Baptist taking a narrow 32-28 lead into halftime. The Lancers extended their lead early in the second period, building a double-digit advantage that Western Illinois could not overcome.
While both teams struggled from beyond the arc, California Baptist’s ability to get to the free-throw line and convert proved critical. The Lancers shot 16 for 20 from the stripe, while Western Illinois went 15 for 21.
Massey, a 6-foot-8 forward from Olathe, Kansas, was the primary offensive threat for the Leathernecks, scoring efficiently inside. Isaiah Griffin added 10 points for Western Illinois.
For California Baptist, Daniels, a 5-foot-10 guard from Compton, also contributed two assists. Devon Malcolm added nine points for the Lancers.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 5,088. California Baptist’s next game is at home against UC Riverside on Tuesday. Western Illinois returns home to face Coe on Monday.
