Metallurg Magnitogorsk at Salavat Yulaev Ufa
UFA, Russia (Interstat) — Roman Kantserov scored the game-winning goal 33 minutes and 58 seconds into the second period, and goaltender Alexander S. Smolin made 28 saves as Metallurg Magnitogorsk edged Salavat Yulaev Ufa 2-1 in a tightly contested Kontinental Hockey League game that required overtime Wednesday night at Ufa Arena.
The victory improved Metallurg’s league-leading record to 46-17, while Salavat Yulaev moved to 33-31. The result flipped the script from the teams’ last meeting on Feb. 13, when Salavat Yulaev secured a shootout win.
The game defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had simulated a 5-3 victory for the home team. Despite giving Salavat Yulaev a 40.3 percent chance to win by its ELO metric, Metallurg’s defensive structure and timely scoring proved decisive in a low-scoring affair.
After a scoreless first period that saw both teams trade chances, Metallurg broke through early in the second. At the 2:19 mark of the period, Daniil Vovchenko netted his 11th goal of the season, converting assists from Alexander Petunin and Valery Orekhov to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The middle frame then descended into a parade to the penalty box, with five infractions called between the two teams in a span of just over eight minutes. It was during this stretch of special teams play that Metallurg capitalized. With Salavat Yulaev’s Yaroslav Tsulygin serving a hooking minor, Kantserov delivered the decisive blow. He took a feed from Derek Barach and Vladimir E. Tkachyov and beat the Salavat Yulaev netminder for his 34th goal of the campaign, a power-play marker that put Metallurg ahead 2-0.
Salavat Yulaev responded before the period ended. At 37:19, Jack Rodewald cut the deficit to one, firing home his 20th goal of the season with helpers from Sheldon Rempal and Dean Stewart.
The third period passed without a goal, despite Salavat Yulaev applying pressure in search of an equalizer. Smolin and the Metallurg defense held firm, forcing the game into overtime. The extra period was short-lived, however, as Salavat Yulaev’s Dean Stewart was whistled for tripping just 36 seconds in, handing Metallurg a four-on-three power play. Although the game-winning goal was scored in regulation, the penalty ensured Metallurg controlled the puck for the remainder of overtime to secure the two points.
Key to the victory was Smolin’s performance in net, turning aside 29 of 30 shots for the win. Kantserov led all Metallurg skaters with four shots on goal to go with his goal, while Makar Khabarov paced the team with five shots. For Salavat Yulaev, Rodewald’s goal and Rempal’s assist and four shots provided the primary offensive push.
Metallurg Magnitogorsk continues its road trip Friday at Sibir Novosibirsk. Salavat Yulaev Ufa remains at home to host Dynamo Moscow on Friday.
