Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod at Avangard Omsk
BALASHIKHA, Russia (Interstat) — Giovanni Fiore recorded a hat trick and added an assist Wednesday night to power Avangard Omsk to a 4-1 victory over Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup at Balashikha Arena.
The home side, bolstered by a 36-save performance from goaltender Nikita Serebryakov, snapped a two-game skid and improved its record to 43 wins and 21 losses, solidifying its position near the top of the league standings. Torpedo, which has lost three of its last four, fell to 35-29.
Fiore opened the scoring for Avangard just over seven minutes into the first period, finishing a setup from Konstantin Okulov. Torpedo responded on the power play less than five minutes later, with Yegor Sokolov netting his 15th goal of the season to tie the game. The assist from Bogdan Konyushkov extended his point streak to five games.
The contest remained deadlocked deep into the second period until Fiore struck again. At the 31:16 mark, he converted a feed from Michael McLeod, with Vyacheslav Voynov earning the secondary assist, to put Avangard ahead for good.
The third period was a tightly contested defensive battle, with Avangard successfully killing off a penalty early in the frame. Torpedo pressed for an equalizer but was repeatedly turned aside by Serebryakov. The visitors pulled goaltender Denis Kostin for an extra attacker in the final minutes, but Fiore sealed the win with an empty-net goal for his third of the night with 1:52 remaining.
Okulov added another empty-netter with just 4.1 seconds left on the clock, assisted by Fiore and Serebryakov, for the final margin. Kostin made 24 saves on 26 shots in the loss.
Avangard’s discipline proved crucial, as the team successfully navigated four minor penalties. Torpedo was unable to capitalize on its lone power-play opportunity. The victory aligned with pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 3-2 Avangard win and whose ELO system gave the Hawks a 71.6 percent probability of victory.
The game continued a dominant trend for Avangard in the season series, following a 6-2 win over Torpedo in November.
Avangard looks to build on the win when it hosts Red Star Kunlun on Friday. Torpedo continues its road trip with a visit to Traktor Chelyabinsk, also on Friday.
