Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod at Avangard Omsk

Preview: Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod at Avangard Omsk

BALASHIKHA, Russia (Interstat) — A surging Avangard Omsk squad will host a streaky Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod team in a key Kontinental Hockey League matchup on Wednesday at Balashikha Arena.

The home side enters with the superior record and recent form. Avangard (42-21) sits near the top of the league standings and has won seven of its last 10 games, despite a 2-1 shootout loss to Sibir Novosibirsk on Monday. Goaltender Nikita Serebryakov has been a cornerstone of their success, posting a .939 save percentage over his last five appearances, including a 45-save performance in a win over Metallurg Magnitogorsk on Feb. 27.

Torpedo (35-28) has been inconsistent, alternating wins and losses over its past six contests. It is coming off a 4-3 victory over HC Sochi on Sunday but was shut out 5-0 by Traktor Chelyabinsk just four days prior. The team will need a more stable effort to challenge the conference leaders.

A player to watch for Torpedo is forward Sergei Goncharuk, who scored a goal and added two hits in the win over Sochi. He has recorded four points in his last 10 games and leads his team’s forwards in shots on goal during that span.

For Avangard, Serebryakov is the clear focal point. The netminder has been exceptional, registering two shutouts in his last eight starts and giving his team a chance to win nearly every night.

The most recent head-to-head meeting was a decisive 6-2 victory for Avangard in Nizhny Novgorod on Nov. 16, 2025. Torpedo will be seeking both revenge and critical points in the playoff race.

Following this game, Avangard will host Red Star Kunlun on Friday. Torpedo continues its road trip at Traktor Chelyabinsk on the same night.
