Avangard Omsk at Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg

YEKATERINBURG, Russia (Interstat) — In a defensive masterclass fueled by a dominant first period, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg blanked Avangard Omsk 3-0 in a Kontinental Hockey League matchup on Friday at KRK Uralets.

The victory, Avtomobilist’s second over Avangard in five days following a 4-1 win on Monday, improved the home team’s record to 10-5. Avangard, which entered the contest as a heavy favorite according to statistical projections, saw its record fall to 9-4. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 4-3 win for Avangard, and its ELO system gave the Omsk-based club a 57 percent probability of victory, but those forecasts were rendered irrelevant by Avtomobilist’s suffocating performance.

The game was decisively tilted in the opening 20 minutes. After killing an early holding penalty to Nikita Shashkov, Avtomobilist struck twice in a span of just over five minutes to seize control.

Danil Romantsev opened the scoring at the 12-minute mark, netting his fifth goal of the season. He was assisted by Artyom Kashtanov and defenseman Jesse Blacker, who recorded the 10th helper of his campaign.

Avangard’s discipline wavered late in the period, taking two penalties that proved costly. Shortly after Alexander Volkov was sent off for hooking, Avtomobilist capitalized on the power play. Blacker, now turning from passer to scorer, fired in his third goal of the year at 17:48, with Curtis Valk and Dmitry Yudin providing the assists.

The two-goal outburst deflated an Avangard offense that had been prolific in recent outings, including a 6-1 rout of Admiral Vladivostok and a 4-1 victory over Lokomotiv Yaroslavl earlier in the week.

The middle frame was a parade to the penalty box, with the two teams combining for six infractions. Despite the frequent stoppages, neither team could solve the goaltenders. Avtomobilist’s Vladimir Galkin, who finished with a shutout, and his counterpart at the other end, weathered a series of power plays to keep the score 2-0 heading into the third period.

Avangard pressed for a comeback in the final frame but was repeatedly stymied by the Avtomobilist defense and Galkin. The home side iced the game with just 1:36 remaining on the clock as Maxim Denezhkin scored an unassisted empty-net goal, his third of the season, to seal the 3-0 victory.

The loss snaps a run of strong form for Avangard, which had won four of its last five games. Avtomobilist, meanwhile, has now won three straight and continues to build momentum in the KHL’s Eastern Conference.

Avangard will look to rebound on the road against Metallurg Magnitogorsk on Sunday. Avtomobilist continues its challenging stretch with a road game against SKA Saint Petersburg on Monday. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Omsk on Sunday, Oct. 19.
